People with Parkinson's disease need rehabilitation exercises

Báo Đại Đoàn KếtBáo Đại Đoàn Kết13/06/2024

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Lien - Head of the Department of Rehabilitation (Viet Duc Friendship Hospital), Parkinson's is a disease that causes a slow, progressive degenerative disorder that reduces the neurotransmitter dopamine. People with Parkinson's often have symptoms such as tremors, reduced movement, slow movement, and reduced balance. Patients often experience tension and stiffness when walking, difficulty maintaining balance, and are prone to falls and injuries. When Parkinson's patients fall, they face risks such as femoral neck fractures and spinal injuries that prevent them from walking.

In addition, Parkinson's patients are also affected in cognition and memory. Therefore, in addition to taking medication to slow the progression of the disease, rehabilitation plays an important role in helping Parkinson's patients improve their mobility, avoid muscle tension or excessive stiffness, and help the muscles become softer for easier walking and more rhythmic movements.

Regarding cognition, rehabilitation exercises will help patients increase their ability to remember and concentrate. Depending on each patient, each patient has different symptoms, so the exercises will also be individualized.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Kim Lien emphasized: Rehabilitation is one of the non-drug treatments for Parkinson's patients. The exercises focus on improving the patient's ability to concentrate, think and remember.

During exercise, patients need to maintain verbal or motor feedback, motivating patients to maintain exercise as a daily habit. Parkinson's patients often have difficulty walking, moving, maintaining posture and balance, leading to the risk of falling and injury for patients.

Rehabilitation exercises for Parkinson's patients can include light weight lifting or cardiovascular exercises such as cycling, walking machines, etc. Patients should not over-exercise or perform exercises or movements that can cause injury or falls. Scientists have proposed some types of exercises suitable for Parkinson's patients including: Tai Chi exercises; Tango dance exercises; Treadmill exercises; Cycling exercises.

However, each patient will be advised by the doctor to practice appropriate exercises to improve each symptom. Rehabilitation exercises do not help cure the disease completely. Regular and correct exercise will help patients reduce symptoms and slow down the progression of the disease.
