Moderate or vigorous exercise may help reduce symptoms of Parkinson's disease

To find out whether exercise can improve the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, scientists at the University of Guelph, Ontario (Canada), conducted a trial on Parkinson's patients.

They divided the participants into three groups of 10 people each at different stages of Parkinson's disease. Each group exercised three times a week at a gym, for 10 weeks.

Participants were between the ages of 45 and 79 and participated in one of two exercise regimens, moderate-intensity or high-intensity.

The authors monitored a variety of parameters including maximal oxygen consumption, fatigue or fatigue susceptibility, gait, balance, and motor symptoms of the participants.

Parkinson's disease is a common disease in the elderly.

The results found that:

  • Exercise helps increase oxygen levels for people with Parkinson's disease, the higher the exercise intensity, the higher the oxygen levels.
  • Any intensity of exercise helps patients reduce motor symptoms by 25%.
  • Exercise of any intensity helps reduce fatigue levels over time.
  • No amount of exercise affected participants' gait, balance, or blood pressure, according to Health Day .

The authors say most people with Parkinson's can exercise at any intensity they feel comfortable with without fear of losing benefits.

According to lead author Dr. Millar Millar, University of Guelph, this study will contribute to improving knowledge about the benefits of exercise for people with Parkinson's disease so that doctors and families can help patients exercise as much as possible. For any disease, in addition to taking medication, we should also think about exercise.
