According to Japanese experts, using smartphones and electronic devices for long periods of time can not only cause myopia but also cause strabismus.

Through monitoring, the risk of strabismus is increasing due to the habit of lying down and looking at the screen, keeping the screen too close and the eyes having to constantly change focus from one side to the other.

Ophthalmology professor Kyoko Ono of Tokyo Medical and Dental University Hospital warns that many people glue their eyes to phone screens at close range, causing strong eye irritation.

She recommends that parents should manage their children's device usage time, encourage them to participate in outdoor activities, and take them to a specialist immediately if they detect any abnormalities such as misaligned eyes...

Miho Sato, a visiting professor of ophthalmology at Hamamatsu Medical University, said that strabismus in children can be improved by changing the way they use electronic devices, such as reducing exposure time or keeping a suitable distance from the screen. However, once the disease has developed, improvement is only effective in early and mild cases, so early prevention is still necessary.

A survey by the Japanese Cabinet Office found that from 2018 to 2022, the average amount of time students spent using electronic devices per day increased significantly, with elementary school students increasing from 118 to 214 minutes, junior high school students from 164 to 277 minutes, and high school students from 217 to 345 minutes.

Strabismus is a condition in which the eyes look in different directions and lack coordination when looking. The eyes cannot focus on one image at the same time.

In recent years, the number of people with strabismus has been increasing worldwide , and most of them are acute, not congenital. This trend has become more evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many people have to stay at home and frequently use electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and gaming consoles.
