The first Mercedes-Maybach-branded SL convertible, featuring the SL63's 577-horsepower V8 engine but paired with softer engine mounts and suspension, along with lavish interior and exterior design details, was first unveiled in August 2024. At that time, many car enthusiasts in Vietnam were curious about whether any tycoon was about to own one of the most luxurious convertible cars in the world , and what the price would be. Nearly a year later, one of the two questions was solved when the price of the Mercedes-Maybach SL680 Monogram was revealed in our country, expected to start from 18 billion VND.
This price will help the Mercedes-Maybach SL680 Monogram become one of the most impressive convertible super luxury cars in Vietnam. The first highlight of the car is the Maybach logo appearing everywhere, including on the front air intakes and soft top, similar to the way luxury fashion brands apply their names to designer handbags, a very classy way of recognition. And customers can go even further by adding Maybach badging across the bonnet, split by a chrome spoiler. The Mercedes-Maybach SL680 Monogram also gets a windscreen surround, lower air intakes in the front bumper, and a separate Maybach grille (with lights, of course). The interior takes a similar approach to help differentiate the Mercedes-Maybach SL from other SLs. While the basic dashboard architecture and vertical touchscreen are the same, the media display and digital instrument cluster feature Maybach-specific animations and start-up graphics, and the steering wheel, seats, lower console and door panels are all covered in crystal white nappa leather.
While the 680 in the Mercedes-Maybach SL680 Monogram's name raises hopes that Mercedes has somehow crammed the Mercedes-Maybach S680's 6.0-liter bi-turbo V12 under the hood, we regret to inform you that there's only a V8. And it's not even the SL63 SE Performance's 805-horsepower PHEV V8, but just the regular 4.0-liter from the SL63, which makes 577 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels through Mercedes-Benz's usual 9G-Tronic automatic transmission. Mercedes-Benz doesn't say exactly how much heavier the SL680 is than the SL63. But it must be a lot, as the company says the Maybach takes 4.1 seconds to hit 62 mph, while the SL63 with the same engine and power output takes just 3.6 seconds, and the 470-horsepower SL55 takes 3.9 seconds. Top speed is also reduced from the SL63's 195 mph to 162 mph via an electronic limiter. To help the V8 feel as refined as a V12, Maybach engineers made a number of significant changes, including softer engine mounts, recalibrating the throttle response, and adding a “noise-optimized” exhaust system. Optimization in this case is the complete opposite of what we, as car enthusiasts, expect from a convertible sports car.
The Mercedes-Maybach SL680 Monogram also gets more sound insulation than the SL63 and a softer suspension. In short, it’s a bit more damped and less fun to drive than other SLs, but these tweaks really add to the luxurious feel. And besides, if you want an SL that’s all about performance and agility, the AMG lineup will satisfy. But there’s one feature of the Mercedes-Maybach SL680 Monogram that makes it sportier than any other SL on sale: it only seats two. Mercedes has gone back to a 2+2 arrangement for the latest SL, a configuration it hasn’t offered since the late 1980s, but the 680 swaps out the tiny rear seats for an aerodynamic cover that extends the rear floor up to the front headrests.
