Coffin incident at Dublin Airport in Ireland

The coffin containing the remains of a citizen who died abroad was brought back to Ireland but the plane forgot to unload it and took it back to Greece, causing outrage among the family and leading to an investigation into the incident, according to the Sunday Independent on June 4.

The article said ground services ignored the removal of a deceased man's coffin after a flight from Greece landed at Dublin Airport (Ireland) on May 22.

The family of the deceased were waiting with the hearse at the airport, but the incident resulted in the coffin not being discovered and unloaded as planned, causing it to be sent back to Greece.

After being notified, the family of the unnamed man had no choice but to return home and re-arrange the funeral. The company involved promised to resolve the matter as soon as possible and sent the coffin back on another flight at a later date.

Swissport, which handles ground handling services at Dublin Airport in Ireland, has apologised to the family. A spokesman said the company is conducting an internal investigation into the incident.

"We deeply regret what has happened to the family at this difficult time and have done everything possible to ensure the matter is resolved as quickly as possible," the company said in a statement.

"We are now urgently investigating to ensure lessons are learned," the statement said.

A family member involved said they were devastated by the incident. Dublin Airport Authority declined to comment.

The coffin was originally flown to Dublin Airport on an Aegean Airlines flight from Greece. The airline has not responded to a request for comment. It is understood another airline flew the coffin back to Ireland the following day.
