Traveling along Highway 4C from O Quy Ho Pass to Sa Pa town, visitors will see rows of cherry blossom trees blooming brightly, standing out among the green tea hills.
In late December, when traveling along Highway 4C from O Quy Ho Pass about 7 km from Sa Pa town, visitors will encounter an oolong tea plantation. Among the green tea hills are thousands of cherry blossom trees blooming brilliantly in pink.
Normally, in autumn, the cherry blossom trees will lose all their leaves, leaving bare branches. But when the coldest winds of winter begin to blow around mid-December, the scenery here changes rapidly, the dry branches blooming in unison.
Photographer Dao Van Vinh (Vinh Dav), living in Hanoi , came to Sa Pa in late December, when the cherry blossoms were at their most beautiful. Vinh said he had been here many times but each time he had a different feeling.
"The attraction of the tea hills in the blooming season makes me want to come here every year to hunt for the most satisfactory frames. It can be said that this year is the most beautiful year I have witnessed since the flowers started blooming in 2017. Just standing at any angle, you can take beautiful photos," Vinh said.
Cherry blossoms are more beautiful when the sun is up. In the winter, the rows of trees bloom, creating a fairy-tale scene. The best angle to shoot from above is to see the whole picture of pink cherry blossoms blending with the green background of tea hills.
The cherry blossoms are blooming at the coldest time of winter, so the flowers are even more vibrant. The ideal weather, a mix of sunshine, cold air, humidity, and wind speed, creates conditions for visitors to capture beautiful moments when the flowers and nature blend together.
Cherry blossoms are five-petaled flowers similar to apricot blossoms. The flowers are light pink-purple in the early days of blooming and become darker in the later stages, so the scenery changes over time.
By the end of the season, the tree will turn orange-yellow, resembling the colors of the changing leaves when viewed from a distance.
Early morning or sunset are the two best times to take pictures of the flower hills. However, visitors should pay attention to the timing. Around 7am-7:30am this season, the tea hills are still very foggy and after 5pm, it starts to get dark.
This area is managed by a Taiwanese tea company. Currently, O Quy Ho ward in collaboration with the company opens the area for free for visitors, without selling tickets. Visitors can enter the tea hill through the main gate about 500m from National Highway 4C, then visit the production process and buy oolong tea products, priced from 150,000 VND (children free).
This is also the time when many tourists come here to take beautiful photos with family and friends.
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Phuong, Chairman of O Quy Ho Ward, said that opening the tea hill area for tourists to visit and take photos with cherry blossoms is part of the Winter Festival program of Sa Pa town. The opening time is from December 20 to January 2, 2024.
The cherry blossoms at Sa Pa’s oolong tea hills are at their peak and will fade over the next two weeks. There are a number of homestays around the tea hills for visitors who want to enjoy the view in the early morning, with prices starting at VND150,000 per person per night. However, most visitors will travel from Sa Pa town, with a taxi costing around VND400,000 round trip.
