Accordingly, the Quang Ninh Health sector has actively implemented many measures to encourage mothers to breastfeed, such as: Organizing breastfeeding counseling activities for pregnant women, mothers, and families about the benefits of early breastfeeding within the first hour after birth, exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months and breastfeeding for up to 24 months, how to breastfeed properly, how to maintain milk supply, how to express and preserve breast milk; communicating to employers (state agencies, enterprises, companies, etc.) about the benefits of breastfeeding to provide practical support for mothers exclusively in the first 6 months after birth, how to maintain milk supply when mothers return to work after 6 months of maternity leave.
Dr. Nguyen Thi Trang (Department of Reproductive Health, CDC Quang Ninh ) said: Breast milk is the first and most effective natural "vaccine" for newborns because breast milk contains millions of living cells, antibodies, enzymes and hormones that no other milk can copy. These components play a key role in building and strengthening the baby's immature immune system, helping the baby fight against countless pathogens from the outside environment. Breast milk also promotes superior brain development thanks to its rich DHA, ARA and choline content...
According to Dr. Trang, breastfeeding also brings many practical health benefits to mothers, that is, breastfeeding stimulates the uterus to contract faster, helps mothers recover effectively after giving birth and significantly reduces the risk of postpartum hemorrhage. At the same time, this process also helps mothers quickly regain their shape thanks to significant energy consumption.
Stemming from the desire to improve the physical health of children from birth, since 2019, Quang Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital has researched and applied the topic "Application and development of the Breast Milk Bank model at Quang Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital". After many years of investment in research, study, and implementation with the support of the health sector, as well as experts from major hospitals in the country, on July 28, 2020, Quang Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital was awarded the title of "Excellent Breastfeeding Practice Hospital" by the Ministry of Health and opened the first "Breast Milk Bank" in the North, the third nationwide.
During the 5 years of operation, the Breast Milk Bank has received more than 6,000 liters of milk from more than 200 mothers who donated breast milk, of which more than 5,600 liters of pasteurized milk meeting standards were provided for more than 22,000 newborns at Quang Ninh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital. The selection of milk with strict standards, along with modern procedures and equipment for storing and processing breast milk, has ensured that every sick child, newborn who cannot breastfeed (including premature, low birth weight babies, or sick mothers, mothers who do not have milk immediately) can access a safe source of donated breast milk, helping children increase their resistance, reduce the risk of enteritis and infectious diseases.
In particular, the Breast Milk Bank has made a strong contribution to the care of newborns during the Covid-19 pandemic and children whose mothers were severely infected with Covid-19 and had to be transferred to field hospitals.
According to medical experts, the mother's body will automatically produce milk whether the baby is breastfeeding or not. However, after the first week, the amount of milk produced will depend on the baby's need to breastfeed. Therefore, doctors also advise mothers who want to maintain their milk supply to breastfeed regularly and have a healthy, scientific diet to have a quality source of milk for their baby.
