Green Logistics: A Mandatory Requirement to Improve Competitiveness

At the “Green Logistics Forum - Resilience in the face of change and connection with FIATA World Congress 2025” held on July 11, experts and businesses affirmed that green logistics is no longer an option but a mandatory requirement. This is the key for Vietnamese businesses to integrate and improve their competitiveness in the global value chain.

Speaking at the forum, Mr. Dao Trong Khoa, Chairman of the Vietnam Logistics Services Association (VLA), affirmed that in the context of global economic fluctuations, green transformation helps Vietnamese logistics enterprises integrate more deeply into the global value chain.

Sharing the same view, Mr. Pham Tan Cong, Chairman of the Vietnam Federation of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), said that new technical barriers such as ESG standards, Net Zero and carbon border tax force businesses to transform to survive and increase competitiveness.

According to Mr. Pham Tan Cong, developing green logistics will be an advantage for Vietnamese enterprises to move faster in the global sustainable development strategy.

This policy has been clearly demonstrated by the Government. Mr. Pham Tan Cong stated that the National Strategy on Green Growth has set the goal of “greening” economic sectors. The Prime Minister also issued Decision No. 882/QD-TTg, in which logistics services are one of the 18 key topics.

Mr. Tran Thanh Hai, Deputy Director of the Import-Export Department, said that the State is playing a constructive role, specifically Decision No. 876/QD-TTg approving the action program on green energy conversion in transportation. However, the conversion process still faces many barriers. Mr. Hai pointed out the challenges of awareness, habits and asynchronous infrastructure.

From the perspective of European businesses, Mr. Koen Soenens, Vice Chairman of the Transport and Logistics Committee, European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (EuroCham), commented that logistics infrastructure in Vietnam is not yet synchronous and policies are still inconsistent.

To overcome the challenge, many businesses have proactively sought solutions. Mr. Tran Tien Dung, Chairman of Macstar Group, informed that this business has pioneered the trial of inland waterway transport connecting Hai Phong - Ninh Binh to reduce costs and carbon emissions.

All these efforts are geared towards an important event: the World Congress of the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA World Congress 2025), which will be held for the first time in Hanoi in October 2025. Mr. Nguyen Duy Minh, Vice President of the Vietnam Logistics Business Association (VLA), said that the congress, themed “Green Logistics, Fast Adaptation”, is expected to gather more than 1,200 delegates from over 150 countries. This is considered a historic opportunity for Vietnamese logistics enterprises to integrate internationally at home, exchange and cooperate with leading partners in the world, thereby affirming their position and promoting the country's image.
