On May 29, Mexico's National Electoral Institute (INE) said the agency would not install nearly 100 polling stations in some localities due to security concerns.

INE was forced to halt plans to install the above polling stations due to serious new problems arising in some constituencies, of which insecurity and violence were the most important causes.

According to INE President Guadalupe Taddei, the list of 96 polling stations that were not installed is located in several electoral districts in the capital Mexico City and the states of Michoacán, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Oaxaca and Sinaloa. These are also localities with criminal gangs, especially those involved in heroin and human trafficking.

In addition to security reasons, Ms. Taddei said that the preparation of personnel for the voting process in some constituencies has not been completed due to objective reasons, leading to the possibility that voters will have to go to nearby polling stations to exercise their civil rights.

However, the INE Chairman said relevant agencies are working to remedy the situation before the general election.

In mid-May, Mexico mobilized nearly 3,000 soldiers and National Guard forces to protect 465 candidates and election officials, amid a wave of violence that has left dozens of candidates murdered ahead of the election.
