While conducting archaeological excavations at the Sanga do Cabral Formation - a prehistoric sedimentary rock area in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, a team of paleontologists from the Federal University of Pampa, the Federal University of Vale do São Francisco, Princeton University and Harvard University unexpectedly discovered a strange fossil relic. This fossil specimen underwent a meticulous cleaning and preparation process, before being studied in detail, as well as officially naming this new species. Photo: @Federal University of Pampa.
Extensive archaeological exploration and analysis techniques estimate that the fossil skull of this Kwatisuchus rosai species dates back to the early Triassic period, about 249 million years ago. This ancient amphibian was about 1.5 meters long and belongs to the Benthosuchidae family (a small group of giant crocodile-like amphibians that lived during the Triassic period. They lived mainly in rivers and lakes. They grew up to 2.5 meters long and have no direct relatives alive today).
