Central Ukraine shakes, Russia opens door to Dnipropetrovsk

Russia said on July 7 it had taken control of its first village in central Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region after months of advancing toward the border, dealing a heavy psychological blow to Kiev.

Russia's New Breakthrough in Dnipropetrovsk

According to some media reports, Russia has captured the village of Dachne in the Dnipropetrovsk region, an important mining and industrial region of Ukraine. “Our troops have advanced further in this direction and have driven the enemy out of the village of Dachnoye. This is the first inhabited area in the Dnipropetrovsk region where Ukrainian forces have retreated,” Vladimir Rogov, a Russian-appointed official, was quoted as saying by Russia’s state news agency RIA.

Dachne lies on the northern bank of the Vovcha River. The offensive forced Ukrainian forces to retreat from the area between the rivers towards the town of Novopavlivka to avoid being surrounded. Their defense was further complicated by the limited number of crossings on the Vovcha River, as Russian airstrikes frequently targeted the bridges and pontoons built by the Ukrainian military.

However, Kiev has denied any Russian presence in Dnipropetrovsk. The Ukrainian military has confirmed that its forces have repelled attacks in Dnipropetrovsk, including the Dachne region.

Dnipropetrovsk is not one of the five Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Kherson, Lugansk, Zaporizhzhia and Crimea that Russia has annexed in recent years. But Russia used Dnipropetrovsk’s capital, Dnipro, as a testing ground for the Oreshnik missile in late 2024. Moscow claims the missile hit a Ukrainian aviation manufacturing facility.

Russian forces appear to have made border crossings a key strategic objective in recent months, and Moscow's further push into the region could cause logistical and economic problems for Ukraine.

Ukrainian military expert Oleksiy Kopytko said the situation was "really difficult" for Ukrainian forces in Dnipropetrovsk, as Russia hoped to create some buffer zone in the area. But he said: "The Ukrainian army is holding its ground."

Speaking to the press after the Russian attacks, Ukrainian President Zelensky stressed: “Air defense remains the top priority to protect human lives.” Ukraine is currently worried that the US will cut aid after President Trump decided to stop providing the country with some key weapons.

The US decision could severely weaken Ukraine’s ability to defend its cities and frontline forces against a sustained Russian offensive. Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said last week that any delay in supporting Kiev’s defenses would only allow Russia to prolong the war. Analysts at the US-based Institute for the Study of War noted that suspending US aid would allow Moscow to accelerate its gains on the battlefield, something it has done before.

Moscow's offensive tactics

Russia has recently launched a series of large-scale drone and missile attacks targeting areas including military recruitment centers in Ukraine, as part of a broader campaign of incursions that comes as US-led peace talks have stalled.

In June, Moscow first announced that its forces had crossed the border and advanced into the neighboring Donetsk region. Assessing Russian tactics, Ukrainian soldiers said the enemy used attack drones and missiles to carry out dual attacks.

This tactic involves conducting an initial strike on a given location or target. After causing partial damage, Russia then conducts a follow-up precision strike to completely destroy the target.

Oleksiy, deputy commander of the mobile air defense unit of the Ukrainian Territorial Defense Forces, said that Russia has increasingly increased attacks with drones and cruise missiles, using both types of weapons simultaneously "to threaten Ukraine." First, Russia launches drones, attacking infrastructure or buildings. When Ukraine deploys forces to rescue, Moscow continues to deploy missiles, leaving the enemy unable to react.

A Russian drone attacked an entertainment complex near Kiev in June, and a second drone attacked the facility after rescuers arrived at the scene, an official with Ukraine’s Emergency Services said.

In addition to launching dual attacks, Russia has also changed the way it fights to counter Ukraine’s “drone defense fortress.” Russian units have switched to motorcycles and other more mobile vehicles to deliver troops to the front lines to avoid enemy UAVs.

For its part, Ukraine has changed the structure of its trenches and fortifications to slow the Russian advance. It has built shorter defensive lines and established low-lying, low-visibility positions to avoid Russian drones.
