Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên04/12/2023

Doctor, pharmacist Nguyen Thanh Triet, Deputy Head of the Department of Traditional Medicine, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City, said that lemon basil (Tần đa) is a perennial herb belonging to the Lamiaceae family, growing naturally and cultivated throughout the warm tropical regions of Africa, Asia and Australia.

Many benefits of lemon basil essential oil

Studies show that lemon basil contains many different chemical components belonging to the groups of monoterpenoids, diterpenoids, triterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, phenolics, flavonoids, esters, alcohols and aldehydes.

"Many pharmacological effects of lemon basil include antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, wound healing, anti-epileptic, insecticidal, antioxidant and analgesic activities," Dr. Triet shared.

In addition, lemon basil has been shown to be effective against respiratory, cardiovascular, dental, skin, digestive and urinary diseases. This medicinal herb is widely used by indigenous people in tropical rainforests in folk medicine or for culinary purposes.

Lemon basil leaves contain many essential oils that are effective in treating coughs.

These effects are believed to be largely related to the essential oil of the plant with highly bioactive compounds such as Carvacrol, Thymol, β-Caryophyllene, α-Humulene, γ-Terpinene, p-Cymene, α-Terpineol and β-Selinene. These compounds are found in lemon balm leaves.

"Currently in our country, lemon basil is used to treat coughs, sore throats, antiseptics, hoarseness (fresh leaves soaked in salt), and flu (leaves boiled in water for steaming). In addition, it is also used to treat high fever, poisoning, vomiting blood, nosebleeds, and stomachaches. Fresh leaves are often used in doses of 10-16 grams per day," said Dr. Triet.

Natural antibiotics from chives

Specialist Doctor 2 Huynh Tan Vu, Day Treatment Unit, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, Campus 3, said that chives are considered a natural antibiotic, especially for respiratory and intestinal diseases in children. Chives have been studied by scientists to contain sulfur compounds, saponins and bitter substances...

In particular, Odorin in chives is considered a specific antibiotic for staphyllococcus aureus and bacillus coli. In addition, chive seeds also contain alkaloids and saponins. Fresh chive juice contains many antibiotics that are effective against many types of bacteria in the digestive tract in general, especially intestinal diseases in particular. The advantage of chive juice is that it is not spicy, adding a little rock sugar makes it like a syrup and is easy for children to drink.

Chives contain natural antibiotics that help prevent and treat colds.

"Just wash a handful of fresh chives, chop them finely, mix with a little rock sugar, steam in a pot of boiling rice until it dries up or steam in a double boiler, let it cool and give it to your child to drink to immediately relieve coughs, colds, and fevers. It should also be noted that this remedy is better for children when using fresh chives, do not boil them as this will reduce the effectiveness of the antibiotic," Dr. Vu shared.

For people with colds and coughs due to cold, you can use 250g chives, 25g fresh ginger, add a little sugar and steam until cooked, eat the chives and ginger and drink the water after steaming.

In addition, chives contain allicin. Allicin has the effect of lowering blood pressure and preventing the production of cholesterol in the body. Moreover, they also have antibacterial and antifungal properties, eliminating bacteria and fungi in the intestines, ensuring the digestive system works well.
