Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree announced that the force launched a missile targeting the US aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in the Red Sea in response to US and UK airstrikes in Yemen.

It is unclear whether the Houthi response had any impact on the US aircraft carrier. The Pentagon did not immediately comment.

Saree said the strikes by the two Western countries killed 16 people and wounded 41, including civilians. The attacks targeted the Salif port in Hodeidah province, a radio building in the Al-Hawk district, the Ghalifa area and two houses.

The US and UK militaries previously announced that they had attacked Houthi targets in Yemen on May 30 to prevent this force from affecting maritime activities in the Red Sea.

The US Central Command announced that it had struck 13 targets in Houthi-controlled areas with the UK. The UK Ministry of Defence said the joint operation took place at three locations in the city of Hodeidah in the province of the same name, where drones and surface-to-air weapons were believed to be stored. London said it had carefully planned to minimise the risk to civilians and non-military facilities.

However, Houthi spokesman Mohamed Abdelsalam said the attack was a brutal violation against Yemen.

Iran's allied Houthis have attacked Israeli-linked vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden since the Hamas-Israel conflict erupted in October 2023 in a show of solidarity with the Palestinians. The US and UK then launched strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen in February, prompting the group to retaliate against their vessels.

On May 31, Iran's Foreign Ministry also condemned the attacks by the two Western countries, saying they were a violation of Yemen's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and a violation of international law and human rights.
