Wax coconut, also known as cream coconut, is a solid coconut with a very thick but not hard coconut flesh. This coconut flesh is soft, supple and has a richer taste than regular coconut. There is almost no water inside the coconut, like condensed coconut water.
Wax coconut grows only in one place, in Tra Vinh province. Only the climate and soil unique to this land can grow this special coconut. Therefore, wax coconut is very expensive, 10 times more expensive than regular coconut.
Mr. Thanh Tung, who specializes in selling wax coconuts, said that the appearance of wax coconuts is no different from other coconuts, but the flesh inside is very thick and soft like sticky dough, sometimes taking up almost all the space inside the coconut shell. The water is also very little, viscous and clear like dew.

Based on the shape and color of the fruit, Cau Ke wax coconut (Tra Vinh) is divided into five types: round wax coconut, long wax coconut, edged wax coconut, green-shelled wax coconut and yellow-shelled wax coconut. Each type has different thickness and thinness of coconut meat.
“Although it is a separate coconut variety, not all wax coconuts have solid fruit. Normally, a bunch of coconuts has more than 10 fruits, if there are 2-3 wax coconuts, it is considered a lot of fruit. It is normal for a bunch of coconuts to have no wax coconuts," said Mr. Tung.
Because of its rarity, the price of this type of coconut is not cheap, the cheapest is about 100,000 VND/fruit, the expensive is up to more than 200,000 VND/fruit, depending on the size, weight and quality of the coconut meat inside.
Tra Vinh wax coconuts are available all year round, but the main season is around mid-July every year. At the moment, it is not easy to find a wax coconut in Hanoi . This type of coconut is always "out of stock". "If you want to buy a lot, you might be able to buy 2-3 at a time. Otherwise, you have to wait because there are no immediate deliveries" , said an online wax coconut seller.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Hau, Deputy Director of Dung Ha specialty agricultural product distribution system, informed that this specialty is currently in short supply, and often out of stock.
"Many customers asked to buy wax coconut from us but could not buy it because it was out of stock. Suppliers informed us that this type of coconut is currently scarce and cannot be imported," said Mr. Hau.
Dung Ha store on Kim Dong street (Hoang Mai, Hanoi) only has 3 wax coconuts left.
Mr. Hau said that every 3 days to a week, the suppliers of this system will transfer about 20 - 30 wax coconuts, at a price of 210,000 VND/fruit.
Not only the fruit, the price of cultured wax coconut seedlings is also very expensive, sometimes selling for up to 900,000 VND/tree. Meanwhile, high-quality common coconut varieties are sold for only 50,000 - 60,000 VND/tree.
