International scientific conference on protecting and promoting the value of Cheo art

On the occasion of Vietnam Cultural Heritage Day, on the morning of November 23, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism in collaboration with the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Sciences , Hanoi National University organized an international scientific conference "Protecting and promoting the values ​​of folk performing heritage and Cheo art in contemporary society".

Attending the workshop were comrade Hoang Dao Cuong, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism. On the side of Thai Binh province, there were comrade Nguyen Khac Than, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; comrades of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee, leaders of the Provincial People's Council.

Cheo is a folk performing art form, integrating music , dance, plays, folk literature... with a rich and diverse system of characters and melodies, expressing the range of emotions, personalities, and nuances of people. Cheo plays and melodies describe many aspects of life, reflect social customs, history, express love for homeland, country, people, love between couples, contain laughter, simple, honest humor and have profound educational value. Created and passed down through many generations, to this day, traditional Cheo still spreads strongly, occupying an important position in the cultural and spiritual life of Vietnamese people. Cheo art heritage has been inventoried and included in the list of national intangible cultural heritage.

The international scientific conference “Protecting and promoting the value of folk performing heritage and Cheo art in contemporary society” attracted international scholars from 6 countries: the United States, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, South Korea, China and experts, cultural researchers from management and research agencies, organizations, domestic universities, artisans directly involved in practicing Cheo art...

Through the workshop, we aim to continue researching, identifying values, assessing the current status of the work of protecting and promoting folk performing heritage and Cheo art from an interdisciplinary perspective, art and heritage, research and management, towards completing the dossier to submit to UNESCO to inscribe Cheo art into the list of representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

Comrade Nguyen Khac Than, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee delivered a welcome speech at the workshop.

Speaking at the workshop, comrade Nguyen Khac Than, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee emphasized: Thai Binh is known as the cradle of Cheo singing art, the whole province currently has 234 Cheo clubs, 100% of schools include traditional Cheo singing in the curriculum. This is proof of the spread and vitality of Cheo in modern society. Thai Binh is also the locality with the largest number of Cheo singers, with the strongest spread among the provinces and cities practicing Cheo in the North. In recent years, the Party Committee, government, departments, branches and organizations in the province have focused on leading, directing, deploying and organizing the implementation, promoting the traditional cultural values, civilization, patriotism, revolution, deepening the traditional cultural values ​​in general, Cheo art in particular; always preserving, promoting and exploiting the intangible cultural heritage values ​​of our ancestors and Thai Binh province is forever worthy of the title of Cheo homeland, Cheo cradle and Cheo land. The land and people of Thai Binh have given wings to the art of Cheo to spread and fly far. The art of Cheo is truly the soul of the people of Thai Binh.

Regarding the significance of the international scientific conference, the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee emphasized: Through the conference, it will contribute to preserving and protecting the values ​​of traditional Cheo art, which has a strong influence in contemporary society, towards the sustainable development of the cultural heritage values ​​of the nation; at the same time, it is also an opportunity to continue affirming that Cheo art has contributed to creating the cultural identity of Vietnam.

Comrade Hoang Dao Cuong, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism delivered the opening speech at the workshop.

Speaking at the opening of the international scientific conference, Mr. Hoang Dao Cuong, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, informed: To date, Vietnam has 15 intangible cultural heritages listed in UNESCO's lists. This not only reflects the identity and diversity of Vietnamese culture but also demonstrates Vietnam's spirit of integration in the common task of protecting and preserving cultural values ​​for the present and the future.

The Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism believes that at the scientific conference, international scholars, experts, domestic cultural researchers and representatives of the heritage subject community will share relevant lessons and experiences, clarify the socio-economic significance of heritage, fully recognize the role of heritage in promoting social cohesion, promoting respect for cultural diversity and cultural dialogue. The success of the conference will also contribute to expanding the concept of cultural heritage, integrating living heritage and policies and programs at the national level, and firmly establishing protection efforts at the international level.

After the plenary session, the workshop proceeded to the sub-committee session. Delegates presented papers on thematic issues of each sub-committee: Research on folk performing heritage and Cheo art from an interdisciplinary approach; the diversity of folk performing heritage in Vietnam and other countries in the world; the transformation and development of Cheo art in contemporary society; protecting and promoting the value of folk performing heritage and Cheo art in contemporary society.

Domestic and international delegates took souvenir photos with artists from Khuoc Cheo village at the Cheo art performance night. Leaders of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Sciences congratulated the artists participating in the Cheo art performance night.

Within the framework of the international scientific conference, on the evening of November 22, in Phong Chau commune (Dong Hung), domestic and international delegates enjoyed a night of Cheo art performance in Khuoc village. At the performance night, artisans and members of the Cheo Club of Phong Chau commune performed 7 unique Cheo pieces: the tunes "Fairy chess game", "About to fly", Cheo excerpts "Old drunk boy", "Tu Thuc du tien", "Ly truong me mo", the songs "Tuyet dat song Thuong", "Duyen phan doi ta". Through the performances as well as the sharing of Cheo artisans, delegates gained more understanding and pride in Cheo art.
