Speaking at a press conference on August 12, Director General of ASEAN Cooperation at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sidharto Suryodipuro said Jakarta aims to lay the foundation for ASEAN cooperation to address current and future challenges.

"To achieve that, we must strengthen ASEAN's institutions and operating mechanisms," the official said, adding that some aspects need to be strengthened, such as human resources in the ASEAN community, dialogue on human rights , as well as maritime cooperation among member countries.

Discussions on strengthening ASEAN institutions were initiated by Indonesia in 2022 with the recommendations of the High-Level Task Force on the ASEAN Community Post-2025 Vision (HLTF-ACV) regarding enhancing ASEAN's institutional capacity and effectiveness.

ASEAN leaders also discussed this issue with the HLTF-ACV at the 42nd ASEAN Summit held last May in Labuan Bajo town, East Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia.

At the above Conference, leaders emphasized the need to enhance ASEAN's institutional capacity and effectiveness, including creating conditions for ASEAN to promptly respond to crises and emergencies.

The 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta will not only attract the participation of ASEAN leaders but also external partners such as China, Japan, South Korea, the United States, Australia and India. According to Mr. Suryodipuro, Indonesia is expected to welcome 27 world leaders and international organizations, including 18 leaders of East Asia Summit (EAS) member countries, the Prime Minister of Canada, the Managing Directors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank (WB).

According to the plan, Indonesian President Joko Widodo will chair the EAS, which brings together 18 countries, including 10 ASEAN member countries, Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Russia and the United States.
