After Italy exited EURO 2024 with a disastrous defeat to Switzerland, in which the Azzurri failed to score a single goal in the first half, the Italian media and fans expressed their anger at the national team. Coach Fabio Capello himself was also very upset with the work attitude of his junior Spalletti.
In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport , coach Capello shared his opinion: "I feel ashamed for him. Maybe it feels like when I returned from the 1974 World Cup as a player (the Italian team was eliminated in the group stage)".
The first thing Capello pointed out that Spalletti was wrong was that this coach was "carrying" the entire coaching formula at his club (Napoli) to the national team. "They are two different jobs," Capello, who has also led the England and Russia teams, emphasized.
“Coaching a national team is not like being at a club, it is more like being a recruiter. The coach has to make decisions based on what he sees in different tournaments. He can have his own ideas, but he has to think about every aspect of his team and sometimes have to adapt.
The reason is simple, he doesn't have time to work with each player, work every day. They all know what to do at their clubs, but in the national team, you can't ask them to change overnight.

When asked, “How do you rate Spalletti’s work at EURO 2024?”, coach Capello, who is 13 years older than Spalletti, said briefly: “It’s arrogance.”
“In the game against Spain, I think Spalletti acted like a club coach. He put the players on the pitch and said: ‘This is us. Let’s see if we are better than them’. He picked a back four against the best wingers at the Euros, and we saw who was better.
Spalletti must take a lot of responsibility (for Italy's defeat), but the players must also feel responsible for wearing the shirt. I have never seen Italy play so badly."
