Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca insisted that winning the Club World Cup is as important as winning the Champions League after his side beat Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) 3-0 in the final of FIFA's first tournament on Thursday.
"I feel that this competition is as important, if not more important, than the Champions League," Maresca said after helping Chelsea win their second trophy of the year, following the UEFA Conference League in May.
Maresca only took over at Chelsea a year ago, after spending time working under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City during their 2023 Champions League triumph.
"I was really lucky to have the opportunity to coach a team that won the Champions League a few years ago. But this tournament has the presence of the top teams in the world and I think we can consider this a classy tournament," the Italian coach shared.
"This is a great victory for us and it will be an inspiration for Chelsea fans for the next four years. So it is a great source of pride," Maresca stressed.
Maresca revealed that he encouraged his players to play aggressively from the start and they quickly took the lead with three goals in the first half, with Cole Palmer scoring twice and Joao Pedro also contributing to the victory.
"The message was for them to understand that we came here to win and I think in the first 10 minutes we showed that," said Maresca. "That determines the style of the game and the quality of the players is also very important."
Chelsea's Cole Palmer was named Man of the Match after an impressive display with a brace and an assist for Joao Pedro.
"It was a great feeling to score and the team showed great fighting spirit. The coach's plan worked perfectly," he said. "I always try to do my job well when I'm on the pitch and hopefully I can continue this form."
This victory is not only an important milestone in Maresca's reign at Chelsea but also affirms the team's position on the international stage, bringing great pride to the fans.
