Joining this journey back to history were Vietnamese Ambassador to Kazakhstan Pham Thai Nhu Mai, Vice President of the Vietnamese Association in Kazakhstan Tu Minh Tuan, community representatives, Vietnamese students studying in Almaty and Embassy staff.
The event was not only an occasion to commemorate the great leader of the Vietnamese people, but also highlighted the significance of two historic visits in the Vietnam-Kazakhstan relationship: President Ho Chi Minh's visit in 1959 laid the foundation for the traditional good friendship between the two countries, and General Secretary To Lam 's visit in May 2025 brought the relationship between the two countries to a new height - Vietnam's first strategic partnership in the Central Asia region.
The 'Following Uncle Ho's Footsteps' journey was inspired by a documentary about President Ho Chi Minh's 1959 visit produced by Kazakhstan Television. The journey included visits to places where President Ho Chi Minh visited, such as the Monument to the Kazakh National Hero Amangeldy Imanov, which represents the indomitable spirit and self-reliance - common values between the two nations; the former Government building of Kazakhstan (now Satbayev National Technical University); the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan; and the Issyk Lake Nature Reserve.
Notably, in November 2024, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation - a sweet fruit affirming the commitment to cooperate for science and sustainable development of the two countries.
The highlight of the journey was the flower offering program at the Monument to Dinmukhamed Kunaev, former First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan, who hosted the reception for Uncle Ho during his visit in 1959.
Writing in his diary, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party Kunaev had the following deep and emotional feelings about President Ho Chi Minh: “…A prominent figure in the international labor and communist movement, Ho Chi Minh, came… During his visit, Ho Chi Minh visited collective farms, state farms, a number of industrial enterprises, cultural establishments in Alamty and the region. We often talked for a long time about issues that interested him. Before leaving, Ho Chi Minh wrote a long letter expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to get to know Kazakhstan.
I would like to tell you this detail – related to Ho Chi Minh’s visit. He was given Soviet money by (the host country) to spend during his stay in our country. But when the visit ended, Ho Chi Minh returned all the money without spending any of it on himself. He always reminded me of a humble, charismatic and wise person.”
President Ho Chi Minh's outstanding thoughts and style on international friendship, which have received sympathy and respect from international friends, are also factors creating the valuable foundation of traditional and friendly relations between nations.
To continue preserving and spreading good historical memories of President Ho Chi Minh, the Embassy, in coordination with the Kunaev Foundation and the Kunaev Museum, will organize an exhibition of photos and artifacts of President Ho Chi Minh during his visit to Kazakhstan, and at the same time promote activities to honor him with Kazakh friends.
In 2023, during an official visit to Vietnam, Kazakh President Tokayev announced that he would name a street in Almaty city after Ho Chi Minh.
Ambassador Pham Thai Nhu Mai and Vice President of the Association of Vietnamese in Kazakhstan Tu Minh Tuan offered flowers at the memorial monument to Dinmukhamed Kunaev, former First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan, who hosted the reception for Uncle Ho during his visit in 1959. |
