On the morning of July 6, at the construction site of the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant Expansion (Hoa Binh Ward, Phu Tho Province), Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) and Power Project Management Board 1 coordinated with contractors to successfully install the rotor of Unit 1.

This is one of the important milestones in the process of equipment installation, completion of the generator set and towards the goal of generating electricity on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day September 2.

The rotor of Unit 1 weighs about 585 tons, is the rotating part of the generator, and is lowered into the stator with strict technical requirements and very high precision. This process requires synchronous coordination between construction and installation units, electromechanical equipment installation and technical supervision team.

The success in installing the rotor not only marks an important step forward in the installation progress of the generator set but also demonstrates the determination and efforts of the units participating in the project to overcome difficulties in complex construction conditions.

According to Mr. Pham Hong Phuong - Deputy General Director of EVN, the timing of lowering the rotor is a very important step. When the rotor is successfully lowered, the process of moving towards the grid connection stage of the generator will be accelerated.

“We aim to connect unit 1 to the grid for the first time on August 19 - in accordance with the Prime Minister 's instructions,” Mr. Phuong emphasized.

Immediately after completing the lowering of the rotor of unit 1, the site will be used to continue the erection of the rotor of unit 2.

"According to practice, after a maximum of 3 months, we will lower the rotor of Unit 2. About a month later, we will connect this unit to the grid. Thus, we can confirm that around the end of November, beginning of December this year, we will connect Unit 2 to the grid as planned," said Mr. Phuong.

According to EVN leaders, the construction of hydropower plants always has many potential difficulties in both the construction and equipment installation stages due to the nature of the project with thousands of complex details and components. However, with strict control at each stage and the participation of a skilled installation team, risks have been minimized, contributing to ensuring progress without serious incidents.

In particular, the Hoa Binh Hydropower Expansion Project is being implemented right on the existing hydropower plant - a project that plays a particularly important role in the national power system. Therefore, all construction activities are strictly controlled to ensure absolute safety for the existing project, from blasting, transporting heavy equipment to waste treatment, all must be carefully calculated to avoid affecting the environment and causing vibrations.

Mr. Pham Hong Phuong also recalled that in 2021, landslides occurred in the project area, forcing EVN to stop construction for 11 months at the request of the Government to conduct a thorough review and assessment. After being allowed to resume construction from October 2022, the units have made efforts to speed up the progress, overcome arising difficulties to bring the project back on track.

The Hoa Binh Hydropower Expansion Project is an important national project, approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 389/QD-TTg dated April 10, 2018. The investor is Vietnam Electricity Group, assigned to the Power Project Management Board 1 as the representative.

The project has a scale of expanding the factory with 2 units, total capacity of 480 MW (2 x 240 MW), average annual electricity output of about 490 million kWh. Total investment is more than 9,220 billion VND.

The project is built on the right bank of the existing Hoa Binh hydroelectric dam, with the factory located in Phuong Lam ward, the water intake and the canal in Thai Binh, Phuong Lam, Thai Thinh wards, Hoa Binh city, Hoa Binh province (now Hoa Binh ward, Phu Tho province). The construction contractor is a consortium consisting of: Truong Son Construction Corporation, Construction Joint Stock Company 47 and Lilama 10 Joint Stock Company.

The project is implemented to increase the ability to provide peak power to the national power system, improve the operational efficiency of Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant in the system, and at the same time improve frequency regulation and frequency stability, contribute to reducing operating costs, extending the life of existing generators and saving maintenance and repair costs.

With the successful installation of the rotor of Unit 1, the Hoa Binh Hydropower Expansion Project is moving closer to an important power generation milestone in 2025 - a year of special significance for the electricity industry and the country, marking the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day September 2.
