Kien is the youngest of four siblings. In 2014, when Kien was in third grade, his father suddenly had a serious accident that left him paralyzed. At that time, his education seemed to be interrupted. Knowing Kien and his family's situation, the Da Loc Border Guard Station adopted him as an "adopted son" to care for, raise and educate. Not only taking care of Kien's food and accommodation, the "adopted fathers" also bought books, clothes, and school supplies for him, and assigned officers to tutor him. When he entered secondary school, Kien no longer ate or lived in the station, but he still received 500,000 VND per month from the "adopted fathers" until the end of grade 12, under the unit's "Helping Children Go to School" program. Every month, the "adopted fathers" discussed with the school about his study situation.
