Gas price today April 8, 2025: Continue to decrease deeply

Việt NamViệt Nam08/04/2025

World market

In the trading session on April 7, the price of Henry Hub natural gas futures for May 2025 delivery continued to decline sharply. The closing price was 3.754 USD/MMBtu, equivalent to a decrease of 0.083 USD or 2.16%. This is the second consecutive decline, following a decline of more than 7% on April 6, indicating a deep adjustment trend in the global gas market.

The main reason is that the weather in the US is getting warmer, especially in the East and Southeast. Rising temperatures have significantly reduced the demand for heating, which is a major consumption factor in winter. In addition, the amount of natural gas in storage in the US is currently higher than the five-year average, creating downward pressure on prices in the short term.

Concerns about a global economic slowdown, trade tensions and persistent inflation have made investors more cautious, with many cutting back on their gas positions and shifting to safe havens such as the US dollar and gold.

Domestic market

Contrary to the downward trend in the international market, domestic retail gas prices in April 2025 remained unchanged compared to March. This price was maintained because the CP (Contract Price) price - the basis for calculating imported gas prices - remained at 610 USD/ton, unchanged from the previous month.

In Hanoi, the price of a 12kg gas cylinder from Petrolimex is currently VND457,400, and a 48kg cylinder is VND1,829,600. In the Eastern and Southwestern regions, Gas South lists the price of a 12kg cylinder at VND475,400 and a 45kg cylinder at VND1,784,111. The above prices include VAT and have been stable since the beginning of March.

According to key gas businesses in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, there are three main reasons why gas prices have not decreased. First, CP prices remain high despite the decline in the international market. Second, this is a stable period after Tet, so prices need to be maintained to protect purchasing power. Finally, input costs such as transportation, storage and the USD/VND exchange rate remain stable, allowing businesses to maintain profits without having to increase or decrease retail prices.
