Fatty liver: 4 familiar foods that silently harm the liver

The two main causes of fatty liver are excessive alcohol consumption and an unhealthy diet. In fact, many seemingly harmless, even common foods are silent culprits in causing fat accumulation in the liver.

Fatty liver occurs when the amount of fat accumulated in the liver exceeds the normal level. Initially, this condition does not cause obvious symptoms. However, if it persists, it can lead to hepatitis, cirrhosis, and even liver cancer, according to the health website Healthline (USA).

Food groups that people need to limit because eating too much can lead to fatty liver include:

Whole milk

Whole milk and dairy products such as yogurt, ice cream, and cheese are high in saturated fat, which is a risk factor for fatty liver. Research published in the journal Nutrients found that a diet high in saturated fat increases fat accumulation in the liver and reduces insulin sensitivity, two key factors in the pathogenesis of fatty liver.

Fast food

Fast foods such as fried chicken, french fries, hamburgers, pizza and industrial pastries are often high in fat, salt, sugar and white starch. These are ingredients that cause fat to accumulate in the liver.

A study published in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology found that fast food only needs to account for 20 percent of total daily calories to increase the risk of fatty liver. This is true even for people who are not overweight.

These fast foods are fried in oil that has been reused many times. Regular consumption of these foods not only causes fatty liver but also weakens the liver's detoxification function.

Artificial sweeteners

Although often considered a less harmful alternative to sugar, many studies have shown that artificial sweeteners can also negatively affect the liver. A study in the journal Toxins found that two popular sweeteners, aspartame and sucralose, have the ability to alter the gut microbiome. Not only that, they also cause chronic inflammation and negatively affect lipid metabolism in the liver, thereby making it easier for fat to accumulate in the liver.

Packaged snacks

These foods include chips, biscuits, salty snacks such as potato chips, shrimp chips often contain a lot of re-fried oil, trans fat and salt. In particular, trans fat has been shown to cause hepatitis and increase the risk of fatty liver, according to Healthline .
