Vietnam National Team does not set a goal of participation in the 2030 World Cup: Reasonable or too safe?

The project to develop Vietnamese football until 2030, with a vision to 2045, was approved by Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong. One of the key contents is the World Cup goal of the Vietnamese team. But instead of participating in the 2030 World Cup, the "Golden Star Warriors" are planned to win a ticket to the world tournament 4 years later.

What are the goals for Vietnamese football?

On the afternoon of July 5, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong signed Decision No. 2368/QD-BVHTTDL approving the Project on developing Vietnamese football until 2030, with a vision to 2045. The strategic goals and tasks of Vietnamese football in the next 20 years are divided into 2 phases, with detailed items recorded in the project.

Regarding the achievements of the Vietnamese national teams, in the next 5 years (2025 - 2030), U23 Vietnam must win medals at the 2025 SEA Games and aim to win gold medals at the 2027 and 2029 Games. Also for the U23 Vietnam team, the goal of passing the group stage of the 2026 ASIAD and the quarter-finals of the 2030 ASIAD is clearly stated in the targets at this stage. In addition, U23 Vietnam also takes on the task of trying to participate in at least 1 Olympic Games in 2028 or 2032.

For the Vietnam National Team, the mission of the “Golden Star Warriors” is to strive to reach the third qualifying round of the 2030 World Cup. The qualification for the World Cup finals for the Vietnam National Team has been postponed for 4 years. The target at the Asian Cup is still to re-establish the goal of reaching the quarterfinals in 2031.

Vietnam national football team has no ambition to participate in the 2030 World Cup at all costs.

Meanwhile, the Vietnamese women's team is under greater pressure to perform. Despite regional rivals such as the Philippines and Indonesia pushing their naturalization strategies, the "Golden Star Warriors" are still tasked with striving to win Gold Medals at the 2025, 2027 and 2029 SEA Games. On the continental front, the Vietnamese women's team also needs to aim for the semi-finals of the 2026 and 2030 ASIADs; get past the group stage of the 2026 Asian Cup and strive to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament four years later. In addition, the Vietnamese women's team also needs to strive to participate in the 2027 and 2031 World Cups as well as win a spot at at least one Olympic Games in 2028 or 2032.

From 2030 to 2045, the Vietnam Football Development Project mentions targets from the region, continent to the world. create, at the SEA Games, men's and women's football strive to maintain the top position in Southeast Asia; win Gold Medals at the SEA Games. In the continental arena, men's football strives to maintain the position in the top 10 countries in Asia; Participate in the ASIAD, Asian Cup, contributing to win medals. Women's football aims to maintain the position in the top 5 countries in Asia; Participate in the ASIAD, Asian Cup, contributing to win medals. At the world tournament, men's football strives to win the right to participate in the World Cup in the period up to 2045. Women's football strives to maintain the right to participate in the World Cup in the period up to 2045.

Not enough ambitious and leaning towards safety

Not to mention the key tasks as well as other goals in the comprehensive development of Vietnamese football towards 2030 and vision 2045, considering the "KPI" for the Vietnamese team in the above project, we also see a remarkable detail.

That is, with the tournaments in the immediate stage, the goals for the Vietnam national team and U23 Vietnam have not shown ambition. For example, with the 2025 SEA Games taking place at the end of this year, Coach Kim Sang-sik and his team only received the task of winning medals. That is, just winning the Bronze Medal, U23 Vietnam has also completed the target as based on the project. It will take 2 years for the goal for U23 Vietnam to be pushed up to strive for the Gold Medal.

The story is similar to the Vietnam National Team. Instead of the desire to conquer the ticket to the 2030 World Cup, after the unfinished journey in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the detailed task for the "Golden Star Warriors" stopped at striving to enter the 3rd qualifying round of the 2030 World Cup. The pressure only really came to the Vietnam National Team in the 2034 World Cup qualifiers. The players at that time had to make an effort to compete for the ticket to the world tournament which will take place in the following... 9 years!

On the positive side, the above targets help the current Vietnamese teams reduce the pressure on performance, thereby avoiding extremes when entering the SEA Games or World Cup qualifiers in the near future. But on the contrary, the mentality of safety and fear of failure when setting high ambitions seems to be present in the goal orientation of the U23 and the Vietnamese national team.

The two targets mentioned above are also not consistent with the previous declarations of ambition for the U23 and the Vietnam National Team. Remember in mid-March 2025, a member of the U23 Vietnam coaching staff affirmed that they will strive to win the SEA Games Gold Medal in Thailand. However, as the approved plan, the story only stops at the threshold of Kim Sang-sik and his team winning medals at the regional tournament.

Or like the goal of the Vietnam National Team to participate in the World Cup. Right in the project approved on the afternoon of July 5, the general goal for the "Golden Star Warriors" is to strive to complete the qualification for the 2030 World Cup Finals. But in the detailed goal section, the "KPI" of the Vietnam National Team is reduced to trying to enter the 3rd qualifying round of the 2030 World Cup!

Ambition to enter Asia's top 10

Along with the achievement goals for Vietnamese football teams, the Project for developing Vietnamese football to 2030, with a vision to 2045, also has some other notable contents.

In particular, the mission of developing our country's football, becoming one of the football centers of the region and continent; by 2030, standing in the group of 10 countries with the most developed football in Asia... received the welcome and support from fans. Because this goal demonstrates the ambition that is consistent with the potential, position and ability to realize that Vietnamese football has.

The project also mentions other goals and tasks such as: Innovating and perfecting the system of selecting and training football talents; linking training of lines and generations of athletes to create resources for professional football clubs and national football teams; Developing high-performance football in a professional direction; Building the Vietnam Football Federation and its member organizations into strong organizations, capable of undertaking management and organizing most football activities in our country...
