Recently, information from the Dong Nai Department of Health said that it had just recorded another death due to rabies due to being bitten by a pet dog. After many years without rabies, over the past 6 months, the Dong Nai health sector recorded an outbreak, in which 2 people died due to being bitten by a pet dog.

Accordingly, the victim was Mr. TV P (37 years old, residing in Song Trau commune, Trang Bom district, Dong Nai ). Mr. P's family raised a dog weighing about 4 kg that was often let loose and had not been vaccinated against rabies. On December 17, 2022, the dog showed signs of aggression and bit people, so Mr. P. chained it up. About 10 days later, the dog slipped off its chain and bit Mr. P. and his wife and 2 children. Mr. P. and his neighbors searched for and destroyed the dog that day.

After being bitten by a dog, Mr. P's wife and two children went to get rabies shots, but Mr. P did not get the shots. On July 12, Mr. P showed symptoms of rabies such as loss of appetite, vomiting, muscle pain, fear of water, fear of wind, fear of light, chest pain, difficulty breathing... Mr. P was admitted to the hospital on July 13 and diagnosed with cerebral rabies. He was then taken to the Ho Chi Minh City Tropical Hospital for monitoring and treatment. On July 14, his family completed the procedures to let Mr. P go home and the victim later died.

According to the Dong Nai Department of Health, this is the second death in Dong Nai due to rabies recorded in the past 6 months, after many years of no rabies in Dong Nai. After recording this case, the Dong Nai Provincial Center for Disease Control coordinated with the functional departments of Trang Bom district to conduct an epidemiological investigation and handle the outbreak.

Previously, the Health Department had investigated the epidemiology and handled the outbreak of rabies transmitted to humans by dogs in Song Trau commune after two people in Mr. NVH's family (in Song Trau commune) were bitten by a dog in the house on March 20 and 21. Accordingly, the dog that bit the owner had not been vaccinated against rabies. By March 26, this dog died.

After that, Trang Bom District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Station took samples for rabies testing and determined that the dog was positive for rabies. Accordingly, the two victims bitten by the dog were injected with anti-rabies serum and vaccinated against rabies.
