In the quarter-finals of Sing! Asia 2025 in Hong Kong (China), Phuong My Chi defeated gatekeeper Hoang Linh - a female singer hailed as China's master of transliteration - with an overwhelming 15-6 vote.
After the show In Bong Phu Hoa , Phuong My Chi conquered the majority of online judges thanks to her sharp voice, from low to high tones, all were handled delicately, especially the "dolphin voice" performance that required high technique.
However, that is not the only attraction of the female singer from Vietnam. She also impresses with her appearance, specifically her performance costumes.
As soon as Phuong My Chi stepped onto the stage, Hoang Linh turned to say to her Zhang Liangying: “Her outfit is really awesome.” The Chinese diva agreed with this comment, and added: “It seems like Chi's outfit was designed by her sister.”
In the waiting room, Canadian star Faouzia exclaimed: “This outfit is really beautiful”. Contestant Miyuna (king of the Japanese station) also praised Phuong My Chi's appearance.
The outfit Phuong My Chi wore in the quarter-finals was inspired by lotus flowers and leaves - the traditional flower associated with the image of Vietnam.
Unlike Truong Luong Dinh, Phuong My Chi's older sister, Quyen Phuong, did not design the costumes. She took on the role of stylist. The outfit Quyen Phuong chose for her sister was from the collection Dong Phu Sa by designer Nguyen Hung Bao. This outfit was once worn by Hoang Thuy Linh in the MV See love.
It can be said that Phuong My Chi is a serious contestant with Sing! Asia 2025. She not only continuously challenges her vocal limits and invests in her performance, but also focuses on her costumes.
Coming to the competition, the singer born in 2003 placed great importance on spreading Vietnamese culture to the world. Therefore, every detail she brought to Sing! Asia 2025 was imbued with the essence of her homeland.
In its debut with In "Buon Trang" , Phuong My Chi immediately made everyone curious with her outfit inspired by the four-panel dress, cami dress and non quai Thao - a bold cultural feature of the North.
Arriving at the filming location at the Singapore station, Phuong My Chi wore an eye-catching ao dai designed by Thuy Design.
"I always keep in mind that costumes are a small contribution to the whole performance. Being beautiful is not enough, performance costumes need to do more than that: support the choreography to become beautiful, create good stage effects and important, the artist feels confident and suitable when wearing them," Quyen Phuong shared.
About the car lotus dress, Quyen Phuong said the idea was “magnificent but neat”. At first, the female stylist was under pressure because she didn't know where to find an outfit that met the above requirements, while there wasn't much time to prepare. Luckily, the lotus dress appeared as “fate”.
Quyen Phuong convinced designer Hung Bao to change the original from a lotus rim covering half of the face and revealing bare shoulders to a cutout to clearly show Phuong My Chi's face, adding an inner shirt and gloves.
The next challenge was that the dress was quite bulky, making it difficult to transport overseas. The crew took turns carrying it, and almost lost their luggage.
"When going abroad, I always observe and urge the team to work with a high sense of responsibility. I want each journey of Chi in Sing!Asia, as well as Chi's appearances in general and her own fashion style, to leave a good impression in the eyes of international friends. Through fashion, I want to let them know that in Vietnam, we have designers from senior to new, all creating outstanding outfits," Quyen Phuong declared.
The efforts of Phuong My Chi and her team were really effective. When commenting on the performance Vanity , Hoang Linh said: “I feel that besides her voice, her appearance can also control many different styles, very creative. I feel that she is like a lotus fairy, like a painting. It feels so happy.”
When talking about the reasons for voting for Phuong My Chi, online judge Anh Hoc Thanh highly appreciated the Vietnamese representative for not only simply singing, but also for knowing how to combine all elements from costume design to stage style into a complete performance.
“Because of that, she easily makes people focus both their hearing and vision on her performance,” said the Chinese musician.
