On March 4, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha chaired a meeting with leaders of the ministries of Construction and Science and Technology to consider solutions for constructing expressway viaducts using slab-on-pile bridge technology.

This is a technological solution proposed by Hoa Binh Company Limited (Hoa Binh Group) to the Government after a successful trial construction in the weak land area of Lach Huyen duty-free zone, Hai Phong city.

Highly rated by experts

Discussing the solution of constructing expressway viaducts using slab-on-pile technology in weak soil areas, Mr. Tong Van Nga, Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Building Materials, said: "The slab-on-pile solution has a number of advantages such as fast construction, no impact on construction progress due to lack of foundation materials, no need to wait for settlement and consolidation, environmentally friendly, low investment costs and maintenance costs.

This solution does not cause separation of residential areas and agricultural production, saves land clearance, saves sand resources like traditional methods, and is not affected by climate change, especially floods and rising sea levels, and is not affected by surface subsidence.

Evaluating the solution for constructing expressway viaducts in weak soil areas using slab-on-pile bridge technology, the Vietnam Construction Association affirmed that the slab-on-pile bridge solution is suitable for applying to expressway viaduct construction solutions to replace the solution of sand filling the expressway foundation in weak geological areas, roadbed locations in areas with large weak geology, requiring complex foundation treatment, taking a lot of time to load, especially roadbed locations through weak geological areas with a thickness of 20-35m, agricultural production areas.

In addition, this solution is also suitable for construction of expressways combined with light rail in urban areas.

Cost-saving solutions for expressway viaduct construction

Previously, the solution of constructing a highway viaduct using slab-on-pile technology was successfully tested by Hoa Binh Group in a weak soil area in the Lach Huyen duty-free zone, Hai Phong.

This technological solution is evaluated by professional units as meeting the design requirements. The Institute of Transport Science and Technology evaluates that this technological solution has many advantages such as fast construction and environmental friendliness.

According to calculations by the Center for Research and Consulting on Construction Investment Cost Control under the Institute of Construction Economics (Ministry of Construction), the investment cost for the construction of the expressway viaduct proposed by Hoa Binh is from 12 to 13.7 million VND/ m2 , much cheaper than the solution of using sand and soil to build the expressway foundation through weak soil areas.

In a document sent to the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Construction (before the merger), the General Assembly recommended that the ministries direct the evaluation of the results of the testing of the pile-based bridge construction technology as a basis for allowing its application on highway projects as a solution to overcome difficulties in progress due to lack of foundation materials, promoting the development of the domestic construction materials market (cement, steel) which is facing difficulties in consumption.

The Vietnam Construction Association also believes that early application of the pile-based bridge solution to construct expressways on weak soil will help save budget, meet environmental protection requirements, ensure sustainable development, and complete the goal of building 3,000km of expressways in the 2021-2025 period, and 2,000km in the 2026-2030 period.

The Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong Expressway is the first expressway in Vietnam with a length of 41km, including 14km of overpasses. This will be a lesson for future expressways in the southern delta of Vietnam.
