Liverpool player Diogo Jota, 28, was killed along with his brother Andre Silva, 25, when their Lamborghini suffered a tyre blowout in the north-western Spanish province of Zamora on Thursday morning.
According to the Spanish Civil Police, the car was apparently overtaking on the A52 motorway at the time when it veered off the road and caught fire.
They studied the tire marks left by the Lamborghini and "all tests carried out so far indicate that the driver of the crashed car was Diogo Jota".
An expert report is being prepared for the court on the accident. Local traffic police Zamora also revealed: "Everything points to the possibility that the car was traveling at a speed exceeding the speed limit on the highway."
The accident happened 11 days after Jota married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso in Portugal. They have three children together.
The funerals of Jota and his brother were held in their hometown of Gondomar last weekend.
Despite claims that the asphalt surface at the scene of the accident was uneven, police told Spanish media that it was not an accident "black spot" and that the road was still capable of speeds exceeding 120km/h.
