With favorable climate and soil conditions, the Northwest region produces many temperate and subtropical fruit trees such as: Mango, longan, plum, passion fruit, orange, banana; perennial trees such as coffee, rubber; non-timber forest products and products with biological value, indigenous medicinal herbs. With the attention and investment of the Party, the State and the efforts of localities, agriculture in the Northwest region has developed quite comprehensively, forming many specialized production areas; agricultural products are increasingly widely consumed in both domestic and international markets.
In 2024, the value of agricultural products participating in exports will reach about 245 million USD, of which Son La will reach 190 million USD, Dien Bien over 22.4 million USD, Lai Chau over 6.5 million USD, Lao Cai 25 million USD. Some typical export items include: Coffee over 90 million USD; tea 22 million USD; cassava starch over 36 million USD; longan, mango about 30 million USD; cinnamon essential oil about 22 million USD. However, production in the Northwest region is still scattered and small-scale; chain linkage is not sustainable; processing, preservation and traceability technology is limited. Many products have not built strong brands, mainly consumed domestically or exported raw.
Delegates participating in the seminar focused on discussing the development of some key products such as: Arabica coffee, macadamia, fruit trees, medicinal herbs, in which, focusing on research, linkage, and demand for connecting product consumption. Based on the assessment and discussion, delegates affirmed that in order to sustainably develop the connection of production and trade of agricultural and forestry products in the Northwest, Localities need to promote digital transformation, build concentrated raw material areas, invest in logistics infrastructure and support businesses and cooperatives to participate deeply in the value chain.
At the Forum, representatives of the Northwestern provinces gave presentations on the development of fruit trees, industrial crops, the need to connect product consumption; production - trade connection - disease precautions; production, trade of ginseng and medicinal herbs; development of medicinal herbs under the forest canopy of the Northwestern region.
Speaking at the Forum, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment emphasized: In the coming time, the Ministry will continue to coordinate with localities to review and propose mechanisms and policies on land, credit, and support for cooperatives. The Department of Quality, Processing and Market Development will coordinate with relevant units and Trade Counselors and Agricultural Counselors to organize export promotion in China, Japan, EU, UAE, etc. At the same time, it is recommended that the Northwestern provinces urgently complete the identification of key fruit tree production areas; develop agricultural processing industrial clusters associated with raw material areas, taking Son La as the core connecting with the midland and mountainous provinces of the North. From there, turn the Northwestern provinces into a modern - green - clean - efficient - sustainable agricultural and forestry production area, affirming its position on the national and international agricultural map.
