On June 23, Ambassador Pham Hung Tam received Mr. Logan K. Howlett, Mayor of Cockburn City, Western Australia.
At the meeting, Mayor Logan K. Howlett introduced the potential and strengths of Cockburn City in the fields of maritime, shipbuilding, healthcare , and heavy industry. Cockburn is also home to Australia's largest strategic submarine maintenance facility.
In addition, the University of Western Australia is planning to establish a research center for developing ocean technology. Therefore, Cockburn's development potential is huge and there are many job opportunities. International students studying in Australia after graduation have many opportunities to choose to find suitable jobs in Cockburn, including in the construction field.
Cockburn City currently has cooperative relations with a number of Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam; has sister city relationships with Yueyang City in Hunan Province, China and Mobile City in Alabama, USA.
Regarding the intention to promote cooperation with Vietnam in the coming time, Mayor Howlett said that in early 2026, he will lead a delegation of about 25 businesses in many fields, fromeducation , trade to maritime, to visit Vietnam, including a planned visit to the industrial park in Da Nang, where a Cockburn City business is operating in the field of shipbuilding.
For his part, Ambassador Pham Hung Tam said that Vietnam is promoting the diversification of its trade partners and Australia is increasingly attracting the attention of Vietnamese investors and businesses. Vietnam and Australia are both participating in a number of regional trade agreements, so there is great potential to continue promoting cooperation.
There are currently about 37,000 Vietnamese students studying at Australian high schools and universities, ranking among the top 5 countries with the largest number of international students studying in Australia.
Vietnam is also a country with a team of highly qualified and skilled engineers and workers in the construction sector, who have been sent to work in countries with high requirements such as Japan, while Cockburn is in need of promoting the construction of infrastructure projects to serve economic development. Vietnamese glass manufacturing enterprises have a need to import coal from Australia.
Therefore, the areas of cooperation that Cockburn may be interested in promoting besides maritime and shipbuilding are education, sending Vietnamese engineers and construction workers to work in Cockburn, and exporting coal to Vietnam.
Emphasizing that in the areas of cooperation of the Vietnam-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, people-to-people exchange and cooperation between localities are always priorities, Ambassador Pham Hung Tam hopes that the Cockburn City government will pay attention to seeking and promoting the establishment of twinned cooperative relations with suitable partners in Vietnam.
