Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has just made a strong point in a leaked internal message. In it, he opposed Meta’s “AI talent hunt” campaign. The OpenAI founder believes that this tactic is not only damaging to the organization’s culture but also lacking depth when it comes to the task of building artificial general intelligence (AGI).

According to Wired , Altman sent a Slack message on the evening of June 30, noting that OpenAI had grown from a small group of “nerds” to the most exciting team in tech. He warned that Meta’s hiring would “have a cultural impact.”

The incident occurred shortly after Mark Zuckerberg introduced Meta Superintelligence Labs, a high-level AI group led by Alexandr Wang and Nat Friedman. In which, CEO Meta recruited talents from OpenAI such as Shengjia Zhao, Shuchao Bi, Jiahui Yu and Hongyu Ren to work in the new group. Previously, Mark Chen, Director of Research at OpenAI, likened this to “someone breaking into a house and taking something.”

Meanwhile, Altman said he was against recruiting talent with money. He said Meta had to resort to "low-key tactics" to find suitable candidates, and declared that "missionaries will beat mercenaries," a way of saying Meta works for money instead of noble goals.

On the Uncapped podcast, Altman also revealed that Meta had offered up to $100 million in recruiting deposits to some leaders, but the “best people” at OpenAI never accepted. However, Meta still attracted key OpenAI figures like Lucas Beyer.

Altman’s internal memo also expressed strong confidence in OpenAI’s direction, pledging to invest more heavily in computing infrastructure and improve its culture after its rapid growth. According to Altman, the company truly believes in building AGI for the common good, not just for profit.
