At an impromptu meeting with the functional forces on duty at Le Thanh International Border Gate on August 13, Chairman of Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee Pham Anh Tuan gave "hot" instructions on extending customs clearance time to 8:00 p.m. every day, instead of ending at 5:30 p.m. as before.
Chairman of Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee Pham Anh Tuan held an emergency meeting with functional forces in the Le Thanh International Border Gate area.
“Do not let businesses wait or turn back because the customs clearance time is over. Customs must work with businesses to sell goods,” Mr. Tuan emphasized, and at the same time requested customs and border guards to be on duty at checkpoints, ready to open regardless of peak or low season.
In fact, in the past, trading activities in Le Thanh were still seasonal, depending heavily on agricultural products between Vietnam and Cambodia. Most businesses only rented warehouses to purchase and gather goods, and did not invest in on-site deep processing. Warehouse infrastructure was still limited in both quantity and area, unable to meet the increasing demand when the market was bustling.
The Chairman of Gia Lai Province affirmed that extending customs clearance hours is just the beginning. More importantly, it is necessary to change mindsets and make the most of opportunities to promote border trade.
Authorities need to work with businesses to remove difficulties, promote their image, call for investment in trade, services, and logistics, and create attraction for Le Thanh International Border Gate.
Last June, the former Gia Lai province announced the master plan for the construction of the Le Thanh International Border Gate Economic Zone until 2045, after being approved by the Prime Minister. With an area of over 415 km², it aims to build this place into a dynamic economic zone, with modern infrastructure and sustainable development.
Le Thanh international border gate extends customs clearance time to 8:00 p.m. every day, instead of ending at 5:30 p.m. as before.
According to the plan, by 2030, the population of the economic zone will reach about 55,000 people, increasing to 75,000 people by 2045. The functional subdivisions include: Le Thanh border gate urban area - economic and trade service center; administrative and political center and rural residential area associated with agriculture, community tourism, and indigenous cultural experiences.
With its strategic location on the East-West economic corridor, Le Thanh International Border Gate is not only an import-export gateway but also an important tourist transit point. With synchronous investment in infrastructure, developed logistics services, and open policies such as extending customs clearance to 8 p.m., this place promises to become a "lever" to help Gia Lai's border economy break through.
