I have allergies, can I keep a dog?

Dog allergy is a condition in which the immune system reacts to exposure to dog hair. To own a dog, people with allergies need to make many changes to control their allergies and limit exposure to dog hair, according to the health website Healthline (USA).

Dog dander and dead skin cells are irritants to people with allergies.

Make sure the allergy is due to dog hair.

The first thing an allergy sufferer needs to do is to determine exactly whether or not their condition is due to an allergy to dog hair. Several tests can help clarify this.

There are cases where the allergen is not dog hair but dust mites, mold, pollen, cigarette smoke or some other substance in the house. There are even cases where the allergen is not in the house but in the workplace or the coffee shop you visit.

Bathe your dog regularly

Regular bathing and brushing of your dog will help reduce dead skin cells and dog hair that are spread around. This is the allergen from them.

Not only that, secretions from the dog's eyes and ears can also cause allergies. If the owner cannot clean the dog at home, they can take it to the shop to have them do it for them.

Do not let dogs in bed

We spend most of our day sleeping and resting in bed. Meanwhile, mattresses, sheets, blankets and pillows are places where dog hair is easily stuck. If people with allergies sleep with these things, it can easily cause stuffy nose, itchy eyes and sneezing. Therefore, no matter how much the owner loves dogs, the bed is a place where dogs should not climb.

Not only that, dogs should not be allowed in the bedroom. To ensure good health and sleep, the best way is to keep the bedroom clean and free of any allergens.

Limit the use of fabric furniture

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America says that allergens such as dust, pollen, and dog dander often cling to carpets, drapes, and fabric furniture, such as upholstered sofas. Reducing the allergens in these items can help improve your allergies.

If possible, replace fabric furniture in your home with other materials. For example, homes with carpeting that covers the entire floor can eliminate it. Instead, use wood or other flooring materials that are more allergy-friendly, according to Healthline .
