From July 7, E Hospital continues to coordinate with Operation Smile to organize a program of free examination, treatment and surgery for patients with cleft lip, palate and many other deformities.

This is the 10th time this meaningful program has been held at E Hospital, marking a persistent and humane journey in the "rebirth" of smiles for thousands of unfortunate children with congenital facial deformities.

Each family that comes to the program has their own story, a long and arduous journey filled with hardships for parents whose children have congenital facial deformities.

Among the children who came for screening in the free surgery program on July 7, the case of DK, 12 years old, from Ha Tinh is very special. The second child in a near-poor family of 4 siblings, K. was unfortunately born with a complete cleft lip and palate on both sides and a complex congenital heart defect: muscular ventricular septal defect, narrowing of the left ventricular outflow tract - this has been an arduous treatment journey for both the child and his family since birth.

The 12-year-old boy has a skinny figure, dark skin, weighs only 26kg, and has had to undergo 5 surgeries: 4 congenital heart surgeries (including 3 open surgeries and 1 vascular intervention) and 1 cleft lip and palate surgery.

The first heart surgery took place when the baby was only 4 months old, when the doctors performed the surgery, when the baby weighed only a few pounds. During the second surgery, the family fell into despair when the doctors informed the baby only had a 10% chance of survival due to complications of severe pneumonia and post-operative infection.

In 2022, my father unfortunately had a serious traffic accident on his way to work, broke his jaw and had to receive long-term treatment. At the same time, taking care of a seriously ill child and an accident-hit husband, the economic burden weighs heavily on my mother's thin shoulders.

After consultation, Dr. Nguyen Hong Nhung - Department of Dentistry (Hospital E) and other doctors decided to perform alveolar bone graft surgery for the child after screening for all cardiovascular problems. This is an important intervention to prepare for the orthodontic process and help the child recover chewing function in the future.

This is just one of many special cases that have been examined, consulted and operated on for free during this screening period.

The subjects examined and consulted this time include children of many ages, meeting health requirements: Children from 6 months old with cleft lip (minimum 6kg), from 12 months old with cleft palate (minimum 8kg), cases of congenital cleft lip and palate sequelae of all ages (lip scars, palatal holes, nasal deformities, dental arch clefts)...

E Hospital will create the best conditions for children to participate in surgery in this program. Children will be exempted from all surgical costs, post-operative care, especially free accommodation and partial support for food costs during treatment at the hospital.

With 10 times of organization, hundreds of surgeries have been performed, hundreds of smiles have been reborn, thereby, lighting up unfinished dreams and giving back confidence to children on their journey to adulthood./.
