Andy Carroll returns to England to play football. |
The former Liverpool striker became a free agent after leaving Bordeaux at the end of last season. Despite attractive offers from France, Italy and Spain, Carroll returned home to be closer to his family and look after his five children.
The deal took place just hours after the club was bought by a private investment group from Qatar. Notably, according to Sky Sports, the former "Three Lions" player not only plays football but also holds a part of the club's shares.
Carroll humorously revealed: "My kids think I'm about to sign a contract with Chelsea. They'll be very surprised. But the important thing is that Dagenham is close to home, my kids can come to the stadium to watch me play."
Carroll is excited about the role of both playing and participating in management: "I have played football for nearly 20 years, I understand how clubs operate from large to small. Now I want to contribute that experience. The first goal is to help the team get promoted. Many other clubs pay much higher wages, but I chose Dagenham because this is a project that is really worth committing to."
Last year, Carroll made a good impression when he accepted a big pay cut to play for Bordeaux. He scored 11 goals in 23 games, helping the club finish 4th in the National 2 (French fourth division). Before that, Carroll also had a season playing for Amiens in Ligue 2.
At his peak, Carroll cost Liverpool £35m to sign him from Newcastle in 2011. Off the pitch, Carroll has five children, three with long-term girlfriend Billi Mucklow and two from a previous relationship. He is currently dating make-up artist Lou Teasdale.
