On July 2, the 5th Vietnam - Italy defense policy dialogue took place in Hanoi .

Speaking at the dialogue, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, Deputy Minister of National Defense , expressed his delight that the Vietnam-Italy defense cooperation continues to be consolidated and enhanced in a practical and effective manner, in accordance with signed cooperation documents and agreements.
Vietnam-Italy defense cooperation has been enhanced in many areas such as delegation exchanges, especially high-level delegations; effective maintenance of dialogue and consultation mechanisms; training; defense industry; and United Nations peacekeeping .
Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien emphasized that the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense is ready to receive Italian soldiers to participate in the International Defense Officials Course at the National Defense Academy and to study Vietnamese at the Academy of Military Science.
Besides, the Deputy Minister of National Defense of Vietnam affirmed that Vietnam consistently implements a foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation and development, multilateralization and diversification of foreign relations; and persists in the "four no's" defense policy.
The two sides signed a dialogue memorandum and a letter of intent on establishing a working group on bilateral cooperation in the field of defense equipment.

Regarding the East Sea issue, Vietnam's consistent stance is to persistently strive to resolve all disputes and disagreements by peaceful means on the basis of international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea; international and regional commitments such as the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC); and support the early signing of a Code of Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (COC) in a practical and effective manner.
In the coming time, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien suggested that the two sides focus on studying the possibility of signing cooperation documents; continue to promote delegation exchanges at all levels, defense industry training, and United Nations peacekeeping; research and expand mechanisms and forms of exchange and consultation to enhance understanding and trust between the two sides; continue to closely coordinate and support each other at multilateral forums, especially the United Nations and within the framework of ASEAN - European Union (EU).
He also asked Italy to speak out in support of the EU's early removal of the IUU "yellow card" warning for Vietnam, and to support Vietnam in promoting defense cooperation with the EU under the Agreement on the establishment of a framework for Vietnam's participation in EU crisis management activities (FPA).

At the dialogue, Mr. Matteo Perego di Cremnago, Italian Secretary of State for Defense, expressed his joy and thanked the Vietnamese Ministry of Defense for the warm welcome.
Mr. Matteo Perego di Cremnago emphasized that both Vietnam and Italy share a vision for the world situation, wishing for peace and stability in the region and the world. In addition, the two countries are also interested in the noble international mission, as well as developing new technology.
Sharing the content that Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien mentioned, Mr. Matteo Perego di Cremnago said that Italy has the capacity in mine clearance and is ready to cooperate with Vietnam in this field. At the same time, he affirmed his desire to promote defense cooperation with Vietnam more strongly in the coming time.
At the end of the dialogue, the two sides signed the minutes of the dialogue and a letter of intent on establishing a working group on bilateral cooperation in the field of defense equipment.
