"The Myanmar army defended the base but the KNLA eventually took control. Several Myanmar soldiers were killed and some fled across the border into Thailand," the Thai army said in a statement.

The statement did not specify how many Myanmar soldiers had crossed into Thailand's Tak province but said they had been provided with humanitarian assistance.

A spokesman for the KNLA's military wing, the Karen National Union, said the KNLA had taken over the military base at around 3 a.m. on March 14. KNLA members took over the base after Myanmar soldiers "dropped their weapons and fled into Thailand," according to a statement from the Karen National Union.

There is currently no information on the reaction of the Myanmar military government to the information from the Thai military as well as the statement from the KNLA.

The KNLA is one of dozens of ethnic armed groups in Myanmar that are still fighting the country's military, according to AFP.
