Developing artificial intelligence to treat myopia and damage on fundus images
The conference gathered many leading experts in the field of ophthalmology, focusing on discussing advances in the diagnosis and control of myopia, especially the application of new technology to improve the effectiveness of screening and treatment. At the conference, competition papers and scientific reports, clinical research and practical experience were presented, providing a comprehensive view of current trends in myopia treatment.

Presenting at the workshop, representative of Saigon Bien Hoa Eye Hospital, Master - Doctor Le Thai Minh Hieu presented the contest entry "Artificial intelligence model to detect pathological myopia and mark lesions on fundus images" which was directly researched, built by the doctor and successfully applied at Saigon Bien Hoa Eye Hospital.
Accordingly, the AI model is designed to automatically detect pathological myopia through grading macular pathology and marking “Plus” lesions on fundus images. With just one fundus image, the AI system can analyze the severity of the disease based on the META-PM classification system (Ohno-Matsui, 2015), and at the same time, identify and localize “Plus” lesions, including choroidal fissures, choroidal neovascularization, and Fuchs spots - serious complications that are difficult to detect in the early stages.
The results of the study showed that the AI system could correctly detect 93.06% of pathological myopia cases and correctly identify 90.91% of non-pathological cases. With "Plus" lesions, the AI recognized 88.9% and incorrectly reported 2.8% of cases. The AI model took an average of 6.06 seconds to process a fundus image, 1.38 seconds faster than a doctor.
The study also showed that the AI diagnosis and grading of myopic macular disease were not only accurate but also very consistent and similar to the assessments of experienced ophthalmologists (Kappa = 0.82).
With these impressive results, the entry of Master - Doctor Le Thai Minh Hieu has excellently won second prize at the conference, honored to be the only Vietnamese reporter named in the international achievement list. This is not only the pride of the doctor personally but also an important milestone for Saigon Bien Hoa Eye Hospital, affirming the capacity to research and apply advanced artificial intelligence technology in ophthalmology.

AI - A powerful tool for doctors
At the conference, Master - Doctor Le Thai Minh Hieu is a pioneer in researching and applying AI routinely in examination, diagnosis and treatment of ophthalmic diseases. Le Thai Minh Hieu emphasized in his competition report: "AI will not replace doctors, but will become a powerful support tool, improving the quality of diagnosis, treatment and eye care for patients".
Previously, the diagnosis of eye diseases mainly relied on the doctor's experience, so small lesions or early-stage diseases were easily missed. The AI model developed by Dr. Hieu will become a "powerful assistant" for ophthalmologists, helping to diagnose diseases more accurately and improve the quality of medical examination and treatment.
With the advantage of processing a fundus image faster than a doctor, AI can meet the screening needs of hundreds of thousands of patients, helping to save time, reduce workload for doctors and shorten patient waiting time.
Thanks to its ability to screen quickly and accurately, AI also supports screening and early detection of diseases at an early stage, helping doctors develop timely treatment regimens for patients. At the same time, this technology helps personalize the regimen, and the treatment plan will be adjusted to suit each patient to optimize treatment effectiveness.

“The artificial intelligence model that detects pathological myopia and marks lesions on fundus images” is not only an effective medical solution but also affirms the pioneering role of Saigon - Bien Hoa Eye Hospital and MSc. Dr. Le Thai Minh Hieu. This is also a great source of pride for the Hospital, demonstrating the tireless efforts of the medical team in updating and applying high technology for the health of the community.
Not stopping here, future research will continue to be improved to increase accuracy, expand the ability to detect more complex lesions, integrate more deeply into clinical workflows, promising to bring new breakthroughs in the Vietnamese ophthalmology industry.
A major step forward in community vision care
The application of AI in the examination and treatment of pathological myopia at Saigon Bien Hoa Eye Hospital is not only a technological achievement but also considered an important step forward, bringing practical values to community vision care.
The AI model helps standardize and improve diagnostic accuracy, no longer relying entirely on the subjective experience of each doctor. This opens up opportunities for people, even in areas with limited access to leading experts, to still be able to access this advanced diagnostic technology.
By detecting dangerous complications early, AI helps patients receive timely intervention, preventing serious progression and the risk of blindness. In the long term, this technology will not only improve the efficiency of community vision care but also significantly reduce medical costs for society, including the cost of treating complex diseases, the cost of caring for people with vision loss, and lost productivity.
