In recent times, in Ben Tre province, the application of science and technology in agriculture has helped farmers reduce production costs, increase productivity, quality and profits.
Previously, like some provinces in the Mekong Delta, brackish water shrimp farming in Ben Tre mainly followed traditional methods such as forest shrimp farming, extensive farming, semi-intensive farming, intensive farming... Since implementing the Resolution of the 11th Congress of the Ben Tre Provincial Party Committee, term 2020 - 2025, Ben Tre has clearly identified the strategy of developing high-tech aquaculture as the key direction for coastal areas.
After nearly 5 years of implementation, the area of high-tech brackish water shrimp farming in Ben Tre province has reached more than 4,100 hectares, exceeding the set target, with an annual productivity of more than 90 thousand tons, accounting for 50% of the province's brackish water shrimp farming output. The value of high-tech shrimp production is about 10,830 billion VND out of the total shrimp production value of 18,000 billion VND. The average productivity of high-tech shrimp farming is 40 - 60 tons, especially some households produce 70 - 80 tons/ha of water surface.

In Ben Tre province, dozens of farm-based production facilities, many shrimp farming cooperatives and cooperatives apply high technology. Most stages are supported by smart machinery and equipment, thus reducing production costs and minimizing risks compared to before.
Mr. Le Van Sam (67 years old, Thanh Hai commune, Thanh Phu district) is one of the successful high-tech shrimp farmers, earning tens of billions of dong each year. Thanks to the high-tech shrimp farming model, Mr. Sam owns a property of nearly 50 hectares of land. Each hectare of water surface area yields 50-70 tons, sometimes 100 tons, after deducting expenses, he earns a profit of 30-50 billion dong per year.
His shrimp farm also received support from the Ben Tre Department of Agriculture to build a farming area that meets ASC standards (strict international standards on environment, society, animal welfare and food safety). Thanks to meeting ASC standards, the shrimp price is 5,000 VND/kg higher than the market price.
The leader of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ben Tre province said that in recent times, the province has paid great attention to investing in developing high-tech brackish water shrimp farming. Currently, the province has invested in building infrastructure for irrigation, electricity, and roads in brackish water shrimp farming areas, concentrated in coastal districts, with an impact scale of more than 300 hectares, with a total investment capital of 250 billion VND; thereby helping farmers reduce production costs, reduce transportation costs, and increase the value and quality of products. The Resolution of the Ben Tre Provincial Party Congress for the 2020-2025 term set a goal of developing 4,000 hectares of high-tech shrimp farming, which has so far achieved and exceeded the set plan.
In the coming time, Ben Tre province plans to continue investing in improving farming infrastructure, expanding the area to meet international standards, enhancing technology transfer and supporting market connections. The province's agricultural sector focuses on researching and applying smart technologies in production management, while promoting sustainable development based on the principles of green - clean - efficiency.
Exceeding the plan to develop 4,000 hectares of high-tech shrimp farming shows Ben Tre province's pioneering role in developing technology-based agriculture, adapting to climate change and integrating internationally. This is an important driving force for Ben Tre coastal areas to constantly strive, contributing to green growth, enhancing the value of the seafood industry and gradually realizing the locality's sustainable development aspirations in the new period.
