Previously, the Vietnamese Grandmaster defeated the host player Jaime Santos in the semi-finals. Quang Liem's achievement made many people admire him even more when Viswanathan Anand dominated the Leon Masters tournament, winning the championship in 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2011, 2016 and 2024.
The Spanish newspaper El Pais wrote a rather long article about the tournament. In it, they praised Quang Liem: “Vietnamese chess player Le Quang Liem is like a true “granite block”. He possesses excellent technique, almost without mistakes or inaccuracies. In the final match of the Leon Masters chess tournament, he easily defeated the living legend of the chess world, Indian chess player Viswanathan Anand (former 5-time world champion and 10-time winner at the Leon Masters).
The newspaper quoted Quang Liem as saying after the match: “I took advantage of my chances in the final against the Indian chess legend, whose games I have studied very carefully since childhood. I was also very impressed with this city and the atmosphere of the tournament.”
Leon Masters is the most traditional chess tournament in Spain with 38 times held. Viswanathan Anand alone has won this tournament 10 times. Quang Liem, Anand, Santos Latasa and 11-year-old prodigy Faustino Oro were invited to participate in a knockout blitz chess match.
