According to MacRumors , Apple has just filed a lawsuit against a former engineer in the Superior Court of Santa Clara County (USA) for allegedly misappropriating trade secrets related to the Vision Pro augmented reality glasses. In the lawsuit filed on June 24, Apple accused Di Liu, who used to hold the position of senior product design engineer at Apple, of downloading thousands of confidential documents during his time working at the company.

According to the lawsuit, Liu worked at Apple for seven years and had access to a wide range of internal data on the Vision Pro project, including product designs, testing results, supply chain strategies, and unreleased device features. The iPhone maker claims that Liu used this access to upload a large amount of documents to his personal cloud storage account just days before he resigned.

Notably, in a statement to Apple, Mr. Liu said that his decision to leave was to “focus on his health and spend time with his family.” However, the company alleges that the former engineer actually accepted a job offer from Snap, Snapchat’s parent company and the developer of the Spectacles smart glasses product.

Notably, Apple said Liu did not disclose his next workplace to avoid having his internal access revoked, which is standard procedure for employees moving to competing companies.

In an analysis of the MacBook provided to Liu by the company, Apple said the engineer had actively selected, renamed, and uploaded specific folders from his computer to a personal cloud platform, then deleted the data from the device, an action the company alleges was intended to conceal the traces of data duplication.

While Snap is not named as a defendant in the lawsuit and has not been accused of wrongdoing, Apple has stressed that there is significant overlap between the documents Mr. Liu obtained and the nature of his new job at Snap. In response to questions from the media, Snap said there was no indication the lawsuit was related to Mr. Liu’s current duties.

Apple is asking the court to order Mr. Liu to return all downloaded documents and to allow inspections of his personal devices and storage accounts to verify that no confidential information is contained. The tech giant is also seeking financial compensation for breach of contract and misappropriation of trade secrets.
