In the context of increasingly complex climate change and the gradual depletion of natural resources, "greening" production and consumption is no longer an option but has become an inevitable trend. Campaigns to plant hundreds of thousands of trees, convert to renewable energy, reduce plastic waste... demonstrate the efforts of businesses on the journey of sustainable development.

However, green production is posing significant challenges for businesses. The huge initial investment costs, along with strict production processes and high requirements for raw materials, make many units hesitant. Therefore, many businesses only dare to experiment with green products on a small scale, although this is an inevitable trend, especially when targeting the export market. The most important issue today is the application of advanced technology, green technology at appropriate costs into production to create environmentally friendly products.

This is also the content that experts, managers and businesses focused on discussing at the forum "Sustainable consumption towards the Green Era 2025" held on July 2 in Hanoi .

Technology is considered the key to green manufacturing and sustainable development.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Huong - Head of Communications Department of Vietnam Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (VINASME) said that although Vietnam has participated in the United Nations Sustainable Development Program for more than 10 years, most small and micro enterprises are still confused and do not even clearly understand what ESG is. The current set of sustainable development criteria is mainly for large enterprises, while small and medium enterprises lack the tools and resources to effectively participate in the green product supply chain.

“We are building a separate set of ESG criteria for small and medium-sized enterprises, with the expectation of creating more favorable conditions for them to approach sustainable consumption in a practical way,” said Ms. Huong.

According to Ms. Huong, technology is the key to realizing ESG goals. For small and medium-sized enterprises, simply applying scientific and technological achievements effectively is enough to create business efficiency. Resolution 57 of the Government on breakthroughs in scientific and technological development, innovation and national digital transformation is expected to create a favorable corridor, but additional support mechanisms are needed that are appropriate to the practical capacity of small enterprises.

Sharing the same view, Mr. Trinh Anh Tuan - Chairman of the National Competition Commission ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ) emphasized that green science and technology is the "key" to open the door for businesses to enter the green era.

“Technology not only helps optimize resource efficiency and reduce environmental impact, but also improves productivity, traceability, saves costs and increases competitiveness,” said Mr. Tuan.

However, Mr. Tuan also noted that the big problem now is how businesses, especially small and medium enterprises, can access and effectively apply green technology at a reasonable cost. This requires synchronous support solutions from policy to finance and technology connection.

From a business perspective, Ms. Le Thi Hong Nhi - Deputy General Director of Communications and Public Affairs of Unilever Vietnam shared that Unilever has been actively improving product packaging to increase recyclability. Currently, more than 70% of this company's packaging can be recycled, many brands such as Sunlight have used 100% recycled plastic to produce packaging.

Every year, Unilever collects and recycles 13,000 to 15,000 tons of plastic waste, bringing it back into production. However, Ms. Nhi said that one of the major obstacles is that recycling technology in Vietnam is still underdeveloped, and the number of suppliers of recycled materials that meet international standards is currently "countable on the fingers".

In addition, the price of recycled plastic is currently about 20% higher than that of virgin plastic due to unstable supply and high production costs. Therefore, Unilever expects the Government to use environmental funds to invest in modern recycling technology, and at the same time have policies to encourage businesses to use recycled materials in products and packaging.
