I work in an office and am often mentally stressed. Can eating sweets help reduce stress? (Thu Quynh, Hanoi )

Reply:

Many studies show that eating sweets improves mood, reduces anxiety and stress. This is because the brain releases many happy hormones such as dopamine and serotonin, creating a pleasant feeling.

However, sugary foods are only a temporary relief and cannot replace treatment for stress. Overuse often backfires, leading to a chemical imbalance in the brain. This imbalance makes depression worse and increases the risk of mental health disorders.

People who have a habit of eating foods high in sugar, if they suddenly stop, their mood is easily affected. Side effects may occur such as irritability, fear, confusion, fatigue, depression. Withdrawal from sweets can appear symptoms similar to withdrawal from other stimulants.

Sweets also cause weight gain, lipid metabolism disorders, blood sugar metabolism disorders, reduced immune function, increased risk of overweight and obesity, and cardiovascular disease.

A healthy diet helps the body stay healthy and control stress (although the effect is not immediate). Prioritize vegetables, fatty fish, avoid overeating and foods that are difficult to digest. Because digestive problems can make stress worse and vice versa. Relax, do yoga, get enough sleep, meet friends, laugh more, think positively, get a massage... reduce stress.

When psychological problems such as stress persist and become more serious, you need to see a neurologist or psychologist for intervention.
