Amorim is arrogant or lacks the courage to correct mistakes

Coach Ruben Amorim came to Manchester United with pride after his success with Sporting Lisbon but now he is following in the footsteps of many of his predecessors at Old Trafford.

Amorim is stubborn and lacks the courage to change.

A coach needs to be steadfast in his football philosophy, but also flexible enough to adjust when results falter. Amorim seems to have absolute faith in the 3-4-3 formation, but lacks the courage to change.

He even refused to watch the penalty shootout with Grimsby, sitting in the technical area with a helpless expression. The recent defeat in the Carabao Cup is the clearest evidence that this rigidity is counterproductive.

This makes Amorim seem like an arrogant coach who believes that sticking to a plan is a sign of principle. While this sounds good in theory, it is wrong in practice. Players need to feel that their coach believes in the plan in order to stick to it.

However, if they follow it 100% and the results are still disastrous - only 27 points from 29 Premier League games, then eliminated from the League Cup by a Fourth Division team - then there is no way to be stubborn anymore. And yet, up to now, the 40-year-old Portuguese coach has not changed direction. Is it possible that Amorim does not have the courage to admit his own mistakes?

Director of football Jason Wilcox is well aware of Amorim’s stubbornness. Part of his job is to back the manager, but at this point it is necessary to discuss United’s stale 3-4-3 system. Previously, Erik ten Hag had been pressured to change his style of play by Wilcox’s predecessor, Dan Ashworth. When results failed to improve, Ten Hag was sacked.

Wilcox has every right to ask Amorim to change the formation, but it won't be easy. Because Wilcox, Omar Berrada (CEO) and Sir Jim Ratcliffe all chose Amorim based on the 3-4-3 identity. If they now bluntly say they no longer believe in that system, it would be no different than losing faith in the Lisbon coach himself.

Now someone at MU must have the courage to speak up and change the tactical scheme before it continues to drag the team into an abyss with no way out.

In a poor performance at Blundell Park, Kobbie Mainoo still had some positive moments, especially in the first half. He moved rhythmically, handled tight spaces skillfully and had the “number 8” skills that United currently lack.

Mainoo deserves respect.

Yet Amorim still doesn’t believe Mainoo deserves to start. This is a player who scored the decisive goal in the 2024 FA Cup final against Man City, then shone brightly at EURO with England, even starting in the final.

Since Christmas last year, Mainoo has been left out of the starting line-up, and United’s results have not improved. With Amorim’s relationship with Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho falling apart, Amorim needed the courage to return Bruno Fernandes to his familiar No. 10 role and give Mainoo the chance to pivot in midfield.
