Hanoi is still leading, while Ho Chi Minh City jumped 10 places to second place in the number of national excellent student competitions.

On the evening of January 25, the Ministry of Education and Training announced the results of the national exam for excellent students, which took place nearly three weeks ago.

Nationwide, there are more than 5,800 candidates from 70 units (in addition to 63 provinces and cities, there are also high schools affiliated to universities). The number of candidates winning prizes is more than 3,350, equivalent to 55.7%.

Compared to last year, the number of awards increased by nearly 1,100, due to the increase in the number of candidates according to the Ministry's new regulations.

In the 10 provinces and cities with many awards, more than half are "old faces" from last year, including Hanoi, Hai Phong, Nghe An, Vinh Phuc, Hai Duong and Nam Dinh.

The new names this year are Ho Chi Minh City, Bac Giang, Quang Ninh and Thanh Hoa. The locality with the strongest improvement in ranking is Ho Chi Minh City, up 10 places from 12th to second place, Bac Giang up 7 places, Quang Ninh up 3 places, Thanh Hoa up 2 places.

In terms of first prizes alone, the capital still leads with 14 prizes, up one from last year. Hanoi National University is right behind with 13 prizes, up four.

The next two positions belong to Hai Phong and Bac Ninh - both with 11 prizes. Compared to the 5 first prizes last year, the number of first prizes of these two localities has more than doubled.

Thanh Hoa has 9 first prizes, Nghe An and Nam Dinh each have 8 prizes, Hanoi Pedagogical University and Vinh Phuc have 6 prizes each.

For the international Olympiads of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Informatics and Biology, the Ministry of Education and Training will call up a number of candidates for the national team selection round in March.

To enter this round, the minimum score candidates need to achieve in Math is 18; Physics 26.5; Chemistry 25.875; Biology 25.5; and Information Technology 16.4 points.

The national exam for excellent students took place over two days, January 5-6, with 12 subjects, including Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics, Literature, History, Geography, English, French, Russian and Chinese.

The percentage of students winning prizes is 60% of the total number of contestants. Of which, the number of first, second, and third prizes does not exceed 60% of the total number of prizes; the number of first prizes does not exceed 5%.

Last year, more than 2,280 out of nearly 4,600 contestants nationwide won prizes. Hanoi, Nghe An, Vinh Phuc and Hai Phong led in the number of prizes. Ho Chi Minh City ranked 12th.
