Wenger speaks out to defend Club World Cup. |
Former Arsenal manager and current FIFA chief of global football development Arsene Wenger told The Guardian : "Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I completely disagree with Klopp's view. I feel the Club World Cup is necessary. If you survey the participating clubs, 100% will say they want to participate in this tournament again. That is the clearest answer about how the clubs value the Club World Cup."
According to ESPN , the new version of the Club World Cup, expanded to 32 teams, attracted great attention in the United States, with the audience far exceeding initial predictions. Wenger stressed: "The decisive question is, do the fans like this tournament? We expected low audience numbers, but the reality is much higher. The answer is clear."
Each Club World Cup match at MetLife Stadium and Hard Rock Stadium recorded an average attendance of more than 60,000, far exceeding FIFA's forecast of 40,000. According to Wenger, this number is a success.
Wenger also defended the quality of the pitches in the US, which have been criticised in the league. “We get two types of feedback,” he said. “The first is about the quality of the training pitches, and the clubs are very positive about them. We have almost no complaints about the pitches.”
Earlier, at the end of June, Klopp criticized FIFA's decision to increase the number of teams to 32 and hold the Club World Cup in the summer: "This is a meaningless tournament. The club that wins will be the worst winner of all time because they will have to compete all summer and then come back to the new season. There are people who have never been involved in the daily work of football and now come up with ideas."
