The 19/5 dam aquaculture area in Tay Long village, Thien Cam commune was previously a deep swampy area, unable to organize production. However, in August 2024, the local government implemented a planning system of ponds and lakes to implement a model of pearl farming. Accordingly, the entire farming area of about 12 hectares is planned into 7 ponds. On each pond, rows of floating buoys are arranged neatly on the water surface to help locate and determine the location of the farmed mussels. Mr. Le Khac Thai in Dong Tien commune (right), the model manager, said: “This is a model invested in by my brother-in-law, Mr. Ho Phi Thuy - who is known as the king of Phu Quoc pearls. Currently, my brother is living and working in Phu Quoc, so I am in charge of managing the model. Our goal is to build a new aquaculture area in our homeland to contribute to the development of the local economy .”
Initially, the freshwater pearl farming model in Thien Cam commune had 20,000 cages with more than 300,000 juveniles. After nearly a year of farming, the pearls have now reached a size of 7 - 8 cm (the standard size for pearl farming is 10 cm or more - PV). To create a good growing environment for the mussels, Mr. Thai and his workers are currently busy adding food (animal manure or lime - PV) to the algae. Along with that, the cages are cleaned, removing moss and mud to prevent disease.
“Recently, we have harvested and sent 5 boxes of pearls over 10 cm in size to Ngoc Hien Pearl Center in Phu Quoc for experimental implantation. In the near future, we will build an implantation house right at the freshwater pearl farming model in Thien Cam commune to facilitate the implementation of pearl implantation,” said Mr. Le Khac Thai, model manager. It is known that up to this point, Mr. Ho Phi Thuy - Director of Ngoc Hien Phu Quoc Pearl Company Limited, owner of the freshwater pearl farming model in Thien Cam commune, has invested billions of dong to implement the model. Although the initial investment capital is quite large, according to Mr. Thuy, pearl farming does not take too much time and effort to care for, and farmers do not need to spend money on food because pearls mainly eat plankton in nature. Through accounting, it is shown that the time to raise freshwater pearls will last from 2 to 3 years or more. After harvesting pearls, the pearl shells will be sold as raw materials to make pearl inlay art products, the pearl intestines are a nutritious food source and will also be sold in supermarkets and food stores.
The old Cam Xuyen district (currently including 7 communes: Thien Cam, Yen Hoa, Cam Trung, Cam Due, Cam Xuyen, Cam Lac, Cam Hung) has about 700 hectares of freshwater ponds, so there is great potential to develop and replicate the freshwater pearl farming model. The model is currently being piloted in Thien Cam commune, implemented by Phu Quoc "pearl king" Ho Phi Thuy, so the pearl farming and culturing techniques have been successfully tested. Through initial assessments, the pearls are developing well, with a high survival rate. In the coming time, when implementing pearl transplantation, we will coordinate with the communes to help people access the techniques, thereby replicating the model depending on local soil conditions.
