Vinacomin: Proactively responding to storms to ensure production

(Chinhphu.vn) - The coal mining industry in Quang Ninh suffered a lot of damage due to floods in 2015 and most recently, typhoon Yagi in 2024. This is a lesson for the industry's units to always be proactive before each rainy and stormy season, especially in August and September when the rainy and stormy season officially begins.

Vinacomin leaders inspect response work of units before storm season

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, 2025 is forecast to be a hot year, with sea surface temperatures in the oceans continuing to remain high. This is one of the unfavorable factors that can increase the risk of strong storms forming. The forecast number of storms/tropical depressions in 2025 is likely to be 11-13, affecting about 5-6 of them on land. Heavy rains and storms that tend to be stronger than last year are a real risk.

In 2025, Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) aims to produce nearly 37 million tons of clean coal domestically, consume 50 million tons of coal, of which 42 million tons are for electricity production, with revenue of about 173,000 billion VND.

With the characteristics of many underground mining units, prevention and response work before the rainy and stormy season to ensure stability, maintain production as well as minimize damage and risks is increasingly focused on by Vinacomin units.

At Ha Tu Coal Joint Stock Company, since the beginning of 2025, the Company has focused many resources to dredge the entire volume of mud flowing to the bottom of the mine.

Implementing the storm prevention plan this year, Ha Tu Coal Joint Stock Company has completed 28 items and works related to storm prevention such as: Improving embankments, settling pits, drainage ditches, dredging streams, and mine drainage belts. Drainage systems at each floor have been constructed, ensuring the task of effectively directing water to settling pits.

Regarding the drainage of the mine, the Company currently has 12 main pumping systems and 3 backup pumping systems. The drainage pumping plan has also been specifically developed, in accordance with the weather conditions. In addition to ensuring the drainage capacity of the mining area during the rainy season, the unit also actively inspects the lightning protection and power supply systems; ensuring that these systems operate smoothly and stably during this year's rainy season.

For Da Bac Logistics Company, storm prevention is not simply a seasonal task, but a race against time to ensure the safety of millions of tons of coal, people and the entire logistics chain in operation. Therefore, from the beginning of the year, the Company has developed a natural disaster prevention and search and rescue plan that is realistic, close to the terrain and close to each location of the coal warehouse, conveyor belt, drainage system, and coal export port. In particular, the "4 on-site" motto is concretized by detailed plans for each key location, each situation of prolonged heavy rain, flooding, and landslides on coal transportation routes.

Previously, on June 12, when conducting a field inspection at key points in storm prevention and control work in Quang Ninh , especially in many areas at high risk of being affected by storms such as the drainage system in the Deo Nai - Thong Nhat area, Anpha canal, the +28 mine entrance area, Khe Sim village and Ha Tu mine.

Deputy General Director of the Group, Director of the Production Control Center in Quang Ninh, Head of the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue of TKV - Mr. Nguyen Huy Nam - said: Storm prevention and control is a permanent task, closely linked to the goal of protecting the safety of workers' lives, equipment, assets and maintaining stable production. Units and the entire Group always aim to ensure the highest safety for production activities and workers. At the same time, Mr. Nam requested that units assigned to manage and operate storm prevention works must regularly inspect and maintain, not allowing passive situations to occur. Units need to pay special attention to developing and practicing incident response plans, ensuring that there are always handling scenarios for all situations, especially in the increasingly unusual extreme weather conditions./.
