On June 29, on the occasion of attending the 3rd Da Nang Asian Film Festival in 2025 (DANAFF III), Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang, Director of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council, had a cordial meeting with Ms. Audrey Azoulay, Director General of the United NationsEducational , Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Da Nang.
The exchange not only affirmed the comprehensive, substantive and effective cooperation relationship between Vietnam and UNESCO but also emphasized the role of culture and cinema in promoting peace , sustainable development and cultural diversity.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang expressed his pleasure at welcoming Ms. Audrey Azoulay back to Vietnam and emphasized that Vietnam always attaches importance to the role of UNESCO as a center for dialogue and intellectual cooperation, contributing to building peace, security and sustainable development globally. He also acknowledged Ms. Azoulay's continuous efforts in enhancing the position of UNESCO, especially in the fields of education, science, culture and information.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang emphasized that in the era of development, Vietnam always puts culture at the center of the national development strategy. Vietnam is committed to preserving and promoting national cultural values, while constantly building modern cultural institutions and promoting cultural industries - in which cinema plays a pioneering role.
According to him, investing in culture not only aims to improve people's spiritual life, but is also a way for Vietnam to actively contribute to the diversity and richness of human civilization.
It is these cultural values with strong identity that are the solid bridge, helping Vietnam integrate more deeply with the world and bring the image of the country and people of Vietnam closer to international friends.
In response, Ms. Audrey Azoulay expressed her pleasure to meet Professor Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang in Da Nang city, where the depth of national identity and the creative spirit of the times converge.
The UNESCO Director-General expressed his sincere thanks to General Secretary To Lam, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, leaders of the Government, ministries, branches and localities for their thoughtful and warm welcome.
Ms. Audrey Azoulay expressed her impression of Vietnam's innovation and was honored to attend the Opening Ceremony of DANAFF, an event contributing to the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

According to the Director General of UNESCO, cinema is her passion and the field of expertise that she has devoted much of her career to. Ms. Audrey Azoulay believes that in the context of the world facing division and conflict, cinema and the art of filmmaking are a universal language, helping to share and create empathy, thereby contributing to building a more tolerant and united world.
In addition, she highly appreciated the professionalism and creativity of the DANAFF III Organizing Committee and expressed her joy at meeting, exchanging and interacting with many veteran filmmakers and talented young directors from all over the world within the framework of this Film Festival, who share the same aspiration to tell stories through images, reflecting the depth of culture and the soul of their nation through the language of cinema.
The UNESCO Director-General especially congratulated the strong development of Vietnamese cinema in recent years, creating a new breeze in the international filmmaking community.
She emphasized the impressive figure that domestic films currently account for 40% of national box office revenue in Vietnam and that Vietnamese films have recently won high awards at prestigious regional and international film festivals.
Director-General Audrey Azoulay affirmed that UNESCO will continue to closely coordinate with relevant Vietnamese agencies in promoting the development of the national film industry in particular and Vietnam's cultural and creative industries in general.

Previously, on this occasion, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay and Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chairman of the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO Nguyen Minh Vu witnessed the handover ceremony of two important cooperation documents between the UNESCO Office in Vietnam and SOVICO Group.
These documents are implemented on the basis of the Strategic Cooperation Agreement for the period 2025–2035 between UNESCO and SOVICO – an agreement signed during the historic visit of General Secretary To Lam to UNESCO Headquarters in October 2024.
This is a vivid demonstration of the increasingly strong, creative and effective public-private partnership model in promoting UNESCO’s cultural and educational programs in Vietnam, while demonstrating a shared commitment to investing in knowledge, heritage and creativity – sustainable foundations for the future.
