Vietnam supports Burundi in developing digital technology

On June 16, 2025, authorized by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of Vietnam, Lumitel (Viettel Burundi) held a ceremony to award 50 computers and 2 international Master's scholarships in Computer Science at the Vietnam Academy of Posts and Telecommunications with a total value of 70,000 USD to the Ministry of Communications, Information Technology and Multimedia of Burundi (Ministry of ICT).

Speaking at the ceremony, Lumitel CEO Phan Truong Son emphasized: "The gift is not only of material significance, but also a symbol of the commitment to sharing knowledge, promoting digital capacity and a testament to the friendly relationship between Vietnam and Burundi, especially in the field of digital transformation".

Also on this occasion, Lumitel CEO Phan Truong Son announced a plan to invest nearly 20 million USD in the 2025-2030 period to popularize telecommunications in Burundi, with the goal of 4G coverage to 75% of the population this year.

On behalf of the Ministry of ICT Burundi, Minister Léocadie Ndacayisaba expressed deep gratitude to the Government and the Ministry of Science and Technology of Vietnam, and highly appreciated the role of Lumitel in connecting and realizing bilateral cooperation commitments. Minister Léocadie Ndacayisaba affirmed: "Modern computers will contribute to accelerating the digitalization process of the Ministry, while the scholarships will help improve the professional capacity of officials, thereby spreading knowledge back to the entire civil service system of Burundi."

Minister Léocadie Ndacayisaba expressed the desire to continue to receive many such meaningful cooperation programs in the future, and committed to accompanying Lumitel in activities to promote digital transformation, for the benefit of the people and development of Burundi.

Minister of ICT of Burundi Léocadie Ndacayisaba spoke at the Ceremony. Within the framework of the Ceremony, the two sides signed the Minutes of the Funding Handover, took souvenir photos and directly discussed the technical configuration of the donated equipment, ensuring suitability for the needs of deploying e-administration and building information technology infrastructure in Burundi.

This event continues to affirm the increasingly deep cooperation between Vietnam and Burundi in the field of technology and digital transformation, with Lumitel playing the role of a strategic bridge, demonstrating the image of the "common child" of the two countries together towards the goal of sustainable development.
